I bought a cakebox of 25 for $40 at CompUSA. DVD Media Inspector reports them as Riteks

    "......1......... .......RITEK...D
    01.@%%7..(d.(d . "

Burned discs will not mount in my Pioneer 107D, it just spits them out. I used a Pioneer 112D to burn them. I tried 3 different ways to burn a movie folder and spray paint as well (details below).

The first burn was in Toast as a UDF disc of a movie folder. The second was from the Video_TS folder option in Toast. The third burn was in disc copy mode after making the dvd folder into a dmg.

All play fine on the 112D.

I looked at the discs in the light and saw that they are translucent. Thinking that might be the cause of their unreadability in the 107D, I spray painted the top of one with grey rust primer. That disc still reads in the 112D but not in the 107D.

I can't find Verbatims retail and saw a post about them being outsourced to India. Does anyone here have a suggestion for a different brand? I don't mind ordering over the net.

Well, Verbatim DL made in India is still probably going to be better than Ritek DL. There is still plenty of Singapore-made Verbatim DL out there.

Often media compatibility may be improved by firmware update which are no more for the 107D unfortunately. NewEgg still has some 8X Verbatim 50 packs for $14.49 plus shipping that should be more compatible with older drives.

If you can get media that work at a good price you can continue to use the drive, but frankly $30 buys a new drive so consider how much you want to go through to keep your NEC

    It's not the drive.

Ritek historically has awful reflectivity (in layman's terms "they read like crap").

They also burn like crap. The burns may not actually be good.

Verbatim is the way to go.

Sony D21 (+R, 16X) SL may be another good choice due to reflectivity affecting readability as stated by lordsmurf. I have a portable DVD player that will not even play Verbatim -R 8X at all, plays Ridata +R 8X with skipping but plays Sony D21 perfectly. FYI these are on special this week for $25 per 100 at Staples or $13 per 50 at BestBuy. For DL media Verbatim is likely best according to many posts I've read.
