I've been backing up my movies for the past three years with very little problem. Over the past year, I've been using AnyDvd (in the background) while I rip the movie with DVD Decrypter. However, I've been encountering problems lately that I've never experienced before that isn't allowing me to back-up my movies. I thought it might just be one or two movies, but in the past week I've tried five movies and I get the same problem with each one. I've also tried on my other computer (with a new and different drive) and the exact same problem occurs.

I keep getting read errors during the rip process which doesn't allow me to complete the copy for any of my movies. It gives me the option of ignoring (which I don't know what impact that has on the back-up) so I've tried doing that and eventually it slows down to such a long crawl that eventually it fails to rip.

The movies that I've tried in the past week are Babel, Harsh Times, The Ringer (and a couple of others that I don't recall off hand). I've tried the following:

Since DVD Decrypter isn't being supported any longer, I've tried several options (these are just what I remember trying):

AnyDvd by itself and ripping - I get read errors
AnyDvd and DvdShrink - read errors
DVD Fab Platinum (on trial) - read errors

I'm really frustrated because this has been a process that I've enjoyed with very few problems for quite some time and now all of a sudden, I'm not able to back-up my movies! I just want to get back to being able to rip my movies without all of these read errors. Is this a new preventative measure that is being taken to stymie people from copying movies or is it something more unique to me?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

    -------

    I should note:

When I got my new computer a few months ago, I began using other programs besides DVD Decrpter because it wasn't being supported any longer so I figured I would try newer programs. However, I'm going to give that a try again once I find where to download DVD Decrypter (which is what I used to do without any issues). I'll report back and let you know if that does the trick. In the meantime though, any thoughts as to what is going on with my issue?

This sounds like a dirty disk!
Although so many at once seems strange.

Try giving the disks a thorough clean and try ripping again. I'm assuming you have the latest version of AnyDVD since they seem to release about 10 updates a day .

I think about 90% of my failed rips are recovered simply by cleaning the DVD. All the ramaining failures are usually then down to scratches (but that's a hazard of letting kids near your DVD collection )

That's what I thought but after five movies, I didn't think that was very likely. I just downloaded DVD Decrypter and used it along with AnyDVD and had my first successful rip in the past week! Now the test - I'm going to try ripping one of the other discs that were giving me issues and see what happens.

So I assume based on the response here that this isn't a common issue? Also, is DVD Fab Platinum not a very good program to use for ripping? I haven't had any success with it so far since I downloaded the trial.

Well, I think things are back to normal. I downloaded DVD Decrypter again and used that with AnyDVD and had no problems with Blood Diamond. I tried it with The Ringer, and again, same problem as before. However, this time, I tried a much more intense cleaning of the DVD and it worked! Before, I used a microfiber cloth and rubbed very deeply on the disc. However this time, I just immersed it with water and then rubbed hard with the cloth and then tried again and it worked. I guess a couple of you guys were correct in that it was a dirty disc. Normally that is what I would have thought as well, but the fact that I had problems with the last four or five movies that I tried to rip, got me thinking that perhaps there was a bigger problem.

I just ripped three discs without any issue so I think I'm back in the clear! In all of my ripping, I've never had four or five discs in a row give me issues like this which is why I thought something else was wrong.

Thanks for all of your suggestions and help!
