Netzero seems to be the best. I've used it. Pretty good speed on it. Libraries is the best. Plus they are pubic so you can just walk in and use it. You might have to sign your name but they don't check IDs.

When are you in Chicago, Jim?

Like zzyzzx says, a library could be your best bet. Last spring I traveled across the U.S. to the Monterey peninsula in California (played golf at Pebble Beach Each day I would check my email and browse the net a bit at the local public library. Hi-speed access, free, and painless in every way.

Just about any hotel that has running water will have free wireless. You may have to get closer to the lobby for it to work though. And even if the hotel does not have it, it is getting so common that you will most likely be able to find a comfortable hot spot nearby. The weird thing that I just ran into was a place that turned it off at like 9:00 PM. WTF?

For some reason I am thinking that there is a gizmo that you can buy that will tell you when you are in range of a hot spot without actually having to fire uo your laptop to search. Might be handy.

They got free wifi. Plus, I can guarantee you will not have trouble finding a hotspot in that area. There's a reason the rent in that area is ridiculous compared to the rest of the city.

Not too sure about hotels in the area. Especially up north (remember guys I live on the southside). But the place Jim is staying is close to the area.

I recently stayed in the 9th floor of high rise hotel in Silicon Valley. For the heck of it I started Netstumbler to see how many Wifi channels were active. I found a couple of dozen choices many on the same channels. Many of these were open. Looks like gridlock to me.

My reaction was I hope my XP firewall can protect me from this !!! I make sure nothing important is saved on my laptop but on long trips I need to pay bills through the bank site.

Maybe we should start a separate thread on travelling wifi laptop security or maybe someone has a link.

Yup, tallest building in North America. (I don't care what you say, BJ). EDIT: actually tallest on this side of the world.

So how you like Chicago? I'm stuck here out south so sucks we couldn't have gone for a drink.

Chicago is my kind of town. I liked the buzz of Manhattan and ever since then we've been visiting "small" towns, so it is nice to get back into a big city before we head into the desert.

Had a steak for the first time in 3 weeks last night at Select Cut Steakhouse in Halstead St, then today tried some of the famous Giordano's stuffed pizza, then walked some of the magnificent mile, then headed up the sears tower.

We're heading out for a drink tonight as we have a number of people leaving our tour.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Toronto (has a population of 5,113,149. Toronto is known to be the most multicultural city in the world, with the United Nations designating Toronto as the "most ethnically-diverse city" five times in a row) is larger than Chicago (pop. 3 million)

    Jim

You got to get an Italian Beef sandwich while you are still in Chicago. I should have chimed in earlier, Genos' Pizza or find a Vienna Hot dog stand. The museums are pretty good too. You could make a few days out of Chicago on the run and not see half of the good stuff. Midway is my favorite air port, because the planes come in with the brakes on before they hit that short runway. I love watching passengers freak out after I mention that 90% of all planes are wearing recapped tires and then the plane hits the runway and everyone gets thrown forward. Sick puppy ain't I?

So are you shooting any footage or taking pics like a good tourist?
