  2. I personally own an Epson R210 and love it. For a while I used non-geniune inks and it really stuffed up the printer, but after getting it serviced and getting genuine inks, I've nver looked back. It's great.

Hey, I've been a passive observer of this sight for about 3 years. I have to say that at the very least I've learned a great many things. I have finally become a member in order to respond to a couple of postings that have cropped up from time to time.

This one, about DVD printing has pop-up a couple of times and never have I seen anyone mention the HP Photosmart D5160. It costs about $90US. (Staples / CCity) I had been wishing and wanting to print my own DVDs for a long time, but had had more than a few problems with Epson Printers. Of course my wife had "heard" all of my complaints and therefore was not about to let me get another Epson. When I saw the HP at Staples I was amazed! $90!! I have been putting that printer through the mill ever since and I would like to tell you it is just perfect.

    1) As a paper printer it is fast, clean, and sharp
    2) As a photo printer it is fast, clean, and sharp - 4X6 paper = not one jam
    3) As a Disk Printer it is fast, clean, and...
The learning curve is not too bad, the normal setup is like every HP USB standard of today. I would not use the software if HP paid me a dollar a copy! I use SureThing, made my own templates. trashed a couple or 4 printable CDs getting the centering just right and haven't looked back since.

HP has it on their web site for $79.99 after rebate. http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printers/photosmart_printers/1/storefronts/Q7091A%2523ABA

I have seen HP print results on paper - looks great. Bright colors are brighter than when printed on an Epson. Epson fans would say that the Epson is more lifelike. I guess it's a matter of personal taste.

Price the HP ink first; I went with Epson - R200, R300; still going after the waste ink mod; 1 runs CIS, the other two run refillable cartridges. I spend $30 a year on ink for all three, and print about 10 discs a week or more, plus photos, books etc. for myself and family.

  9. I have been printing cd labels on a Canon IP4000 and absolutely love it. Ink refills are very reasonably priced as well.

Just visit the following link for easy modification instructions. http://pixma.allhyper.com/index.php/99/2006/10/28/five-easy-steps-to-cd-printing-with-...-printers.html

follow the link that eyedoctor2 provided... It took me about 15 minutes to do the modification. You'll have to order a tray, but they are easily found on e-bay for about $15-$20.

I have not tried the HP, but it seems that I have been hearing good things about that dvd printer. If you don't go through a lot of ink, and don't mind paying the HP ink prices, it may be the easiest way to go, next to the epson.

I also ordered InkRepublic CIS for it.

I had my last Epson R200 die on me last week. I only use it to print the occasional DVD cover these days and it had been several months. I was unable to get the print heads unclogged.

Also at the same time, I decided that I was tired of feeding my brother multifunction ink so that it could clean the print head every day when I wasn't using it.

Since I have a seperate document scanner now (Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 - great device), I didn't need the multifunction anyway.

I replaced both of those printers with the HP D5160. It gives beautiful photo prints, very nice, fast general purpose color prints, and gorgeous DVD prints.

I think I've finally given up on multipurpose printers altogether. I've now got a Brother laser printer for general purpose printing, the HP for specialty DVD and occasional general purpose color printing and a Canon Selphy CP-510 for 4x6 snapshot printing.

The big knock on the HP is the cost of the consumables, but in my case, for DVDs alone, I think it's well worth it since I've never had to ditch an HP printer for clogged print heads, and it doesn't consume in when its just sitting there like the Brother did.

I don't have any idea... I've heard others complain about it, but I've used SureThing's CD/DVD label software for years and they have support for the D5160 - so I was happy.

I don't know what's up with HP's information, but the printer definitely comes with the CD Tray.

The tray is similar in design to the ones from Epson, but it has an integrated ring that can be swung into place to hold miniCDs or miniDVDs - instead of having the seperate insert ring (which I promptly lost from each of my three R200s

Reasons to like Epson R series:
1, Cost of ink when using bulk inks while printing massive quantities of everything.
    2, Available CIS, refillable cartridges.

Based on this, I use the equivalent of 2 refills per month - which would cost $75 to $100 for Epson factory ink, for about $70 per year. Running an R300 with CIS, and printing everything.

    Downside:
    1. Waste Ink pad. I've already modded the R300 to prevent sending it to Epson for repair. It has crashed two times due to this: Once before I modded, once recently when I allowed the waste ink reservoir to get full.
    2. Head Cleaning: I don't know what Epson did in their software, but R's do alot of head cleanings.
    3. Chipped cartridges: OEM Epson carts had a bad habit of shutting you down - or annoying the crap outa you - at 20% and less capacity. CIS has auto reset chips to work around this: You do have to keep an eye on your ink reservoirs to keep everything primed.

Have I had a problem with non-Epson inks: NO

It must be my usage, as my printer doesn't lay idle for long; I've had to clean it (software cleaning) maybe twice, and that was due to running the Yellow reservoir down too low and losing prime.

I figure the cost of replacing the printer when it dies will still be much less than what I've saved in ink during the past two years.

Fortunately for mine: Running CIS on R300, refillable tanks on R200s; 6 4oz bottles of ink are $35 shipped - the ink wasted usually ends up in the waste reservoir behind the printer; about 4 ounces that I've dumped in a year (8%).

I'll put up with that as long as I get excellent print quality, and it's cheap to run.

I've always liked HP's print quality, but never enjoyed buying the ink.[/quote]

I have noticed in the past on Epson printers with Epson cartridges that you can go much longer between usage with no problems. It seems like non Epson cartridge ink dries on the print head quicker. I have wondered if Epson has some sort of additive in their ink that prevents it from drying out as fast.

I have a chip resetting on hand for those Epson carts when they decide to tell me that they are bone dry and all printing must cease.

That is the best way to get full value out of them and continue to use Epson brand ink only.

  24. Having had an R200 and recently purchased an HP5160 I would say that IMO the output from both are very comparable, however the software that comes with the R200 is far superior to what comes with the HP, and unfortunately you can't use the PrintCD software on the HP printer.

  26. I just outfitted my Epson R200 with a wonderful CIS from www.inkjetfly.com. I have seen a number of posts about modifying this (and the other comparable Epson printers) to accommodate something with the ink waste pad, but really do not know what this is all about. Can someone enlighten me, along with instructions/graphics on WHY to do this mod, HOW to do this mod and where I purchase the necessary supplies to PERFORM this mod.

    Thanks in advance!

The HP C5280 documentation shows that it uses a tray for CD/DVD printing, just like the familiar Epson models.

  29. Yup, you are right. I saw the slot on the printer and though that is where the CD/DVD go. But it need a cd/dvd holder to fed into that slot.

So it is a folder feed, which can be taken as feed with removable tray.

Epson 580 is an alternative to the HP C5280 if you want an all-in-one printer/scanner. It uses a tray like the other models. It also has a 5 ink (Claria Hi-def) that improves the colors over my older Epson
