I have to 700 MB video files. Both have the same video and audio streams

    Video: XVID 704x304 23.98fps [Stream 00]
Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 48000Hz stereo 195Kbps [Stream 01]

I want to join them. I know how to join files in VDMod but the audio in this 195, i have options for 192kbps and none for 195kbps. Any bitrate higher/lower than 195kbps would throw the audio/video out of sync. How do i join them?

  2. Different bitrates does not cause audio to get out of sync.

Where do you have such options? Joining should be direct stream copy.

Yes, i chose direct stream copy. When i load one of the AVI files into VDMod it pops the familiar message saying that the audio is VBR and that rewriting the header would cause sync problems. What codec should i use to recompress the audio (please tell me the codec and the bitrate to be used).

  5. You should answer "No" on this question. Did you realize that it is a question? (I am asking, because in normal VirtualDub it is not a question, it is statement and your only choice is to click the "OK").
So you are using direct stream copy - that means no recompression, no rewritting the headers, no other bitrate - it is a COPY of the original audio file. VirtualDubMod should handle this.

Okay, in VDMod, when i open the file it popped up the VBR audio question. I chose 'No'. Then i set the mode to 'Direct Stream Copy'. The in the 'File' menu i chose 'Save As...' and saved the AVI to new location. The result - a copy of the original media file which still has VBR audio. Any more ideas?

By the way the old method whcih i used was like this

    Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use VirtualDub to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into VirtualDub
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Then close VirtualDub and restart it
    Set "Audio" to "No audio"
    Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename.

You cannot join two clips in virtualdubmod if they have VBR MP3 audio. AVIDemux will do this for you however. Load up the first clip, and when asked if you want to build a timemap, answer Yes. Click on File->Append, and do the same again. You should now be able to save the new, combined clip out in Copy mode (equivalent to vdub's Direct Stream Copy mode).

If both the VBR audio streams have the same bitrate, then they'll join after answering
    "No" to the question.

Perhaps you didn't understand what Abond was suggesting. Open one AVI and answer "No". Append the other AVI, set Direct Stream Copy, and Save using a new name. When done you'll have them joined. What do you care if the audio is still VBR? All you want to do is join them, right?
