    Agreed
Not only a serious design flaw or a pain. It would be anacceptable

    Back in 6/12/07 I
    I asked [canadian bacon]

    "What format is used
If the drive is erased or formatted in the unit does the drive format back to 80gb"

I never did get a reply

How many HDD recorders would let you upgrade hard drive in 10 minutes requiring just a screw driver?

For this alone, I would go with this LG machine in a heartbeat.

Not to mention the great picture quality thanks to its LSI chip!

Do I assume that your post is to me

Do I also assume that the reply means that any size drive will be formatted by the Unit to its full capacity.

    That is my question

    Also ---[What is the format]????

My liteon/ilo units also have an LSI chip and will take a larger than original HDD but the drive must be formatted in a PC and not in the recorder as it will format it to the original capacity The format is fat 32 with 64k cluster
Its not that bad. about 1hr and should not be a problem after once done
There is no problem with Edit or other functions when done

If installing a larger than original HDD in the LG results in Edit amd other function problems. I feel that the larger HDD, more than makes a good unit a bad one

The "editing problem" as pointed out by some has nothing to do with HDD upgrade. It is a limitation of the machine (like a lot of others) that clip can not be transfered to DVD at high speed if it is edited. It will only be able to transfer it in slow speed.

The LG file system used can not be recognized by Windows. In my case, I pulled out my HDD from an USB external box and formating it in LG took took less than 30 sec. Is that because there is a Windows FS on the HDD so that it is so fast? I doubt it since LG does not use any Windows FS. It is my understanding from reading others' posts that there is really no need to format it in a PC first.

    In Summary:
    1) This LG will recognize "any" size HHD thrown in ( up to 500G tested so far) and use its full capacity. Mine is now 259 Hours (SP) instead of the original 40 hours (SP).
    2) There is no problem introduced by the HDD upgrade.
    3) Upgrade time: about 10 minutes; tool required: screw drive.

    Hope this helps.

  5. LifeIsGD - as I read through the thread it was obvious to me what this LG model is capable of. Easy HDD replacement with the ability to take advantage of the full size of the HDD. Great news.

Thanks for taking the time to once again explain a very simple concept.

A far as LCSHG's post. LCSHG has demonstrated in the past an inability to comprehend what a poster has written - although others have no problem. This inability often manifests itself as some sort of evidence that the OP has their facts wrong. And then is often followed up with a post that states his inquiry remains unanswered. As demonstrated once again in this thread. It happens quite a bit and this is just another exmple. It gets old after a while. Don't take it personally. Your posts were very clear.

Again I thnk it is obvious what the capabilities of the LG are. Again great news!

    Thanks for the Reply
It would indicate that the LG would accept and format a Larger than original HDD and the format is other than Windows.
I agree that the edit problem has nothing to do with the HDD replacement.
Its replacement does seem to affect any edit in the time used to dub and might be an issue for some
Looking back my term “more than makes a good unit a bad one” is somewhat harsh. I do not have one but feel the LG is a good unit. At the time I was looking for info

Unfortunately when a question is asked and there is no reply or the response is vague and questionable, than asked again. Offence is taken and a person is said not to comprehend.

Thanks Again for your Comprehensive and Informative Reply

  7. canadian bacon has a total of 8 posts here at video help. 6 of them in this thread with the last being May 15th of this year. I believe it is obvious that canadian bacon may have moved on.

That being said I believe the post of May 2nd in this thread explaining the success of a 250GB HDD has held true to form. With additional successful installations as great as 500GB also reported since May 2nd. Making it obvious, for a while now, that the LG is capable of what has been reported.

  9. Yes I did try the 80GB HD in my computer, but unfortunately Windows couldn't see any of the recordings on it.

Here's what you've all been waiting for ...

TADA! A little tool that lets you dump files directly from the HDD to your Windows PC!
    http://ifndef.altervista.org/index_eng.html

    Get From_hdd_lg_to_pc v1.09
unzip it ... virus scan it ... run "from_hdd_lg_to_pc.exe"

A file manager window pops up, with a directory-tree list. Select the clip you want to dump, then press COPY. You will then be prompted on where you want to save the file.

Files are in .VRO format. Renaming them to .MPG may help to make them more friendly with your DVD authoring software.

Of course, you first have to take out the LG harddrive and connect it to your computer somehow (I did via IDE to USB dongle/cable).

Have fun, and don't forget to thank the authors .

Looks like a really good find for LG recorder owners. Nothing applicable to other brands though, right ? (Since they very likely do different, proprietary things with their HD formats and storage schemes.)
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

Zenith, since it's the same company as LG. Asides from that you're probably correct, but that doesn't mean you can't try .

Also found a site with modified LRH-780 firmware, so that it automatically switches off when a timer recording is about to start. I haven't tried it myself. It's supposedly based on the official 60911_NT firmware, which is the latest known. I think the 790s use the same firmware as the 780s ... not positive, though.
    http://gurus.atw.hu/

If you take a closer look at that site, there's a beta firmware for the PAL version of these recorders that let you fast dump edited clips, so maybe they'll modify the NTSC firmware to do the same *fingers crossed*.

    Hi OBS,
    Short trip from down under.....

Wondering if you or others have tried the NTSC F/W for your 780 yet. I've burnt and booted the upgrade from the Gurus, but was a little hesitant to continue. It's now sitting besides my LG 790, waiting for an impulsive day.
Would be interested in feed back on this update.

Also for those with some hacking interests, check out the goings on over at dtvforumdotinfo/index.php?showtopic=42822, and check out the hidden switch menus, etc...

My thanks to obs for that link. I've got an lg hdd rh7823w with a 160 gig harddrive. I had dumped a lot of my old home videos on there for storage. First time around, I'd just burmed them off to dvd-rw and onto an external harddrive for editing. Took days Then the harddrive failed ...

Still had the videos on the lg - with the program obs suggested and an external usb enclosure, it's taking hardly any time at all!
