  1. Will most SVCD able DVD players play SVCDs that are encoded at this resolution (352 X 240)? I know it's not standard, but it takes me forever to encode at 480 X 480 and the results stutter on by DVD711. Since, I'm using a VHS source the quality seems about the same.

  2. You're better off just making an XVCD then, unless there is some specific reason you want to keep it in SVCD format...

I think your statement is correct, that most players will handle a 352x240 SVCD, but some definitely will not, whereas a VCD at that size, with a higher bitrate should be somewhat more compatible.

I would try using 352x480 and mpeg2 first. This complies with the cvd standard and will play on all svcd compatible players. If this fails then I guess your stuck with 352x240.

  4. the stuttering might be due to bitrate not the frame size

although having said that if you have to lower the bitrate your pprobably better off lowering the resolution anyways.

the standard svcd bitrate is too much for some players (and dont say 'i spent $500 on my player - it better take 2500 kbps') because that doesnt mean anything

  5. I have a Hitachi p415U and it plays 352x240 flawlessy on the TMPgenc SVCD basic NTSC template. I really can't notice the difference in picture quality on the TV. Normal 480x480 tends to not be absolutely smooth, especially on high motion scenes. It is not the bitrate for me, but the resolution that causes the stuttering. Unfortunately, I can't really increase the normal VCD bitrate much on my player because it really stutters then (1300kb and higher). If your player will accept it, then it is a great compromise
