  1. I have a Pioneer 111D and have had the following problem before and after getting the latest firmware. I keep on getting the following errors: "power calibration error", "Invalid address for write", and (halfway through the burn!) "Cannot write medium, incompatible format" and also "Failed to set write parameters." I have tried different makes of dvd-r, but the problem of wasted discs persists. Could it be that after less than a year (receipt lost!) of moderate use the writer is on the blink? The discs I have been using are 8x and I used to set the writer to 6x. Now I set the speed to 4x. DVD Decrypter shows the properties of the disc and quite often the discs are shown as 4x speed only! Any advice would be welcome.

What is the firmware on your PIONEER 111D drive? Try using IMGBURN instead of DVD DECRYPTER to burn your discs. Both programs are made by the same author LightningUK but DVD DECRYPTER is no longer updated where as IMGBURN is.

What is the media id of those dvd discs that you're using? Use DVDINFO PRO or DVD IDENTIFIER to find the media id.

  3. Thank you for your reply.

The firmware is 1.29. I tried ImgBurn as you suggested. I put in a blank disc and it showed up as 4x only, the same as with DvdDecrypter. I restarted the computer and this time the same disc was shown as 4x, 6x and 8x. Choosing the 4x speed I started the burn and it conked out just over half way through. Same as before.

The disc I am currently using showed up under DvdIdentifier as follows:

    ** INFO : Drive = PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D - [FW 1.29] - [ATAPI]
    ** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD+R DVD+R-DL DVD+RW

I don't understand the reference to Mode Sense, but I note that only one speed is supported. I tried another disc further down the spindle with the same result.

RITEK GO5 MEDIA is crap media. Try using VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN dvd media. RITEK is considered low grade media. If after using either VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN dvd media and the problem still exists then something could be wrong with your drive. Make sure your drive is in UDMA 4 MODE & that you're using a 80 wire ide cable. For the PIONEER 111D drive using a 80 wire ide cable is a must. You may have to buy a 80 wire ide cable before you can determine that the drive is defective/failing.

Use this guide on how to enable DMA MODE.
