  1. I have an MKV file and when I open it up I get this error:

"Only handle [S_TEXT/] subs for the moment"

After clicking OK, Virtual Dub Mod won't open up the file and I can't do anything. In case it is important, when I watch the video and I check the properties it says these are the sub files that are included in it:

Subtitle: UTF-8 [English, English Subtitles (Subtitle 1)]
Subtitle: VobSub [English, DVD Subtitles (Subtitle 2)]

    What can I do?

What do you want to do with the file once you open it ?

I don't care too much for MKV files, but my understanding is that virtualdubmod's handling for them is pretty dated. You are better off using MKVExtract to get something virtualdubmod is more comfortable with.

What you do depends on audio and video in the mkv which you've not given any info on.

Assuming avi ready streams, and that the vobsub is going to the bin, the easiest thing to do is to use avimux-gui.
Untick the vobsub and re-mux to avi.
edit: uhm you don't really want the srt stream within the avi container either, untick, right click extract and use subs externally.

If you need the vobsub use mkvextract/mkvtoolnix. Extract .sub .idx files.
You can get text subs from the graphical subs using an ocr method with subrip or the old vobsub tool subresync.

what does Gspot tell you about the file, MKVs are a PITA, and i avoid them if I can.

I was able to super to convert one to mpeg2 and later i was able to get mkvextract to extract the video AVI and the audio track

the video quality between the 2 was very very close, but this was a higher RESOLUTION source 960*528, ( so down coversion with both modes came out clean ) which was part of the problem, but the main problem is that its MKV

i haven't tried avimux-gui, but avidemux would not work on the MKV file I had..
