I may be asking a stupid question, but thought I would ask before hauling all this back to the store.

I currently have an internal cd burner. I purchased, an external dvd cd writer. Hooked it up, the cord the plugs into to get power, has one of those black boxes on it, and the green light on that does come on. The little tiny circle green light on the front of the external writer however does not come on, nor does it open when I push the button. Does this mean it doesn't work? I guess I wanted to make sure I don't need to disconnect the interal burner before the external one would work.

No need to disconnect the internal burner. First Check the external dvd burner for a switch. Some of them have one. If not then it is probably bad and I would return it.

Is the usb cable plugged in firmly into the external dvd burner and to your computer?

Does the system meet system requirements for the burner?

Looks more like the drive is not connected to the power in the external enclosure.

Whether they are connected to the USB, or if the computer meets the drive's specs, is not an issue: power up an external and see what I mean.

The only other possibility is the drive is DEAD.

  6. It also could be a bad power supply/cord but I think it's the power switch.
