    Basically I have a DVD that's 3 hours on a 4.7 gb disc

I ripped the DVD to mpg using Roxio and the output is 12.73 gb. Is this normal?

So I converted the 12 gb Mpg to AVI using Sony Vegas and the output is 26 gb !!?

Am I doing something wrong of Roxio and Vegas just produces big files?

I also used Xillsoft to rip the DVD direct to AVI and the result is also above 20 gb.

Basically I just want to rip the DVDs to AVI with minimal visible loss of quality, and file sizes that's almost the same as the DVD.

No, just ripping mpg out of a DVD should land lower than the size of the VOBs.

AVI size dependson bitrate used when encoding, so this is "normal", but you've must have used an unusually high bitrate.

Rip with DVDFab Decrypter, encode to AVI with AutoGK, where you can set whatever bitrate/file size your heart desire.
