When I try to open a video file in virtualdubmod 1.5.10.2 I get a messae regarding VBR audio stream detected. I know the video was encoded in Xvid.
I tried downloading vdub mp3 freeze program but that didn't help.
I checked the log and there's a little yellow dot next to "couldn't locate decompressor for format Xvid (format unkown).
Could anyone help me out?

It sounds like you have two different problems. You can confirm if yu have Xvid installed (or if it indeed is Xvid) by checking with avicodec or g-spot. You can address your VBR problem with this post : https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=309224

Codecs are installed for Xvid. I tried doing the things recommended in the link but I didn't have an option for Choose Uncompressed PCM.

Ok, so I do in fact have 2 problems. The video is most severe I suppose. Here's the full message I get on the Virtualdub Warning screen:
" Couldn't locate decompressor for for format 'XVID' (unkown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow Codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only "Direct stream copy" is available for this video. " -
I looked and the only thing showing as installed is a divx codec pack. I dont' understand how the video could play fine but then the xvid would be messed up? Where do I get an xvid codec pack at?

Why don't you try and click on the red
XVID CODEC
in your post and see what happens.

Ok, thanks but next time learn how to say things in a nicer tone because I didn't look at my post after I posted it and clearly I'm not knowledgeable on what I'm doing.
Actually, just don't respond to anything I post again manono. -
If you followed the instructions then you would have found Uncompressed PCM. It is a standard audio codec.
Are you using Virtualdubmod ?
Also, given the length of time you have been a member, it seems odd that you don't yet know how the forum works, or where the Tools section is.Read my blog here.

awe, and celtric_druid you didn't say anything of use anyways. Don't worry peeps...I'll fix the problem myself...I don't need a bunch of know-it-all snotty people giving me attitude. BYE

Actually guns1inger I know how the forum works...people that spend all their time learning about programs give attitude to the people that don't have hours to do research.
It's the chain of life, the people that have lives have to take the BS from the nerds because they have all the indepth knowledge.
However, I'm gonna go ahead and cancel my account because I don't need a 500lb guy giving me attitude. -
Actually, I have a life, a job in the real world, and a nice family. I come in well short of 500lbs (although I live in a modern country that measures in kgs). I don't have time for people who think their tiny problem is so important they don't have time to search or do any leg work themselves.
Of course, you have stormed off to throw a tantrum, so you probably wont get to read this.
