I am just moving into the world of European dvd imports, and I visited your hacks page and found the hack that enables my Coby 224 dvd player to play dvds from different regions. When I tried the hack, the proper menu appeared, and I could select "region 2," which is what my newly ordered dvds will be.

But here's my question: does the Coby 224 convert the PAL format to NTSC? A friend told me that even though I can select the different region codes on my dvd player, the output might not be playable on my NTSC tv. I checked, and the dvds I ordered are in the PAL format.

I really like my little Coby and hope to keep using it, but I'm worried that this won't work! I can't test it yet as my dvds are presently in the mail from amazon.co.uk. I want to be prepared because I know I'm gonna want to start watching the dvds right away when they arrive in a week or so!

Thanks for any help/ideas you can offer.

From a quick googling it looks like your dvd player can convert to NTSC on-the-fly:

    Code:
    Coby DVD224 DVD Player:

        * Plays DVD-Video (NTSC and PAL), MP3 CD, and JPEG image CD

        * Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound through coaxial or optical digital-audio output (for use with compatible receiver/speakers)

        * CONVERT a PAL DVD disc to NTSC for viewing on any USA TV

        * CONVERT an NTSC DVD disc to PAL for viewing any USA (or any NTSC) disc
          on any PAL TV

        * TURN OFF the conversion and it is only a CODE FREE PLAYER so you can use any PAL-NTSC TV and see all DVD movies in their original quality with no loss due to conversion.

        * It is also 100-240 Volts automatic, very small and lightweight so excellent for traveling.

        * Super Slim Progressive Scan DVD Player

I will have to give it a go when the discs arrive and see if it works. It's funny that the manual doesn't mention the PAL to NTSC conversion thing, but oh well.

    Thanks for your quick reply.
