If you want transitions you need an advanced editing tool like mpeg video wizard dvd.

DVD Lab is a very good authoring program with a lot of capability yet it is relatively easy to use. The on line manual is very clear with a lot of info in it. One feature that I like about it is it allows you to import VOB files. It has an assets box into which you drag the elements that you intend to use to make your menu with. When you drag an element into the assets box, it automatically inspects it to insure that it is DVD compliant. In the case of VOBs, it will also join multiple VOBs into one joined VOB which makes the authoring process straightforward. When you finish and create a DVD, it creates VOBs that don't exceed the 1MB size specified for DVDs.
