  1. Lots of ideas here, none are working for me. I bought the daughter a 'Generic Ipod' on Ebay, it's an MP3/MP4 player that will play Mp3's and also Video files. (It's the one from China that looks just like an Ipod, but the 'wheel' isn't really a wheel, it's buttons.) It comes with some software called 'AMV Converter' that compresses video files such as .avi, .mpeg, .mpg, .wmv, ect. Then they can be put into the player and watched on the cute little screen.

Music videos are no problem. I have downloaded some (.mpeg), and they convert fine and look great! I want to do a DVD movie, but the software suggested don't work right for me.

CloneDVDMobile looks great, but I don't see an option for my kind of Mp3 player. I tried to use the setting for 'Ipod', but it don't have any video when I import it into the AMV converted. I also tried some of the other settings, but no workie.

I've tried some others, like VideoraiPod Converter, don't have a setting for a Mp3 player either. I tried another (Don't remember the name....), it turned the movie into an 'MP4 file', but the AMV converter didn't recognise it.

I need something that will convert a DVD into a MPEG like the music videos I'm downloading and then it will be easy to compress into an AMV......any idea's?????

    Thanks in advance.

VOB2MPG will extract the mpeg streams from your DVD VOB files. Rip to your HDD first using RipItForMe, the use VOB2MPG to get your mpeg files.

  3. Fast reply!! I was coming back to edit my post to say that I also tried VOB2MPG but you beat me to it!!

I'm already good on the Ripit4me, the movies are backups........I just need to convert to MPEG....

The AMV converter didn't like the Mpg file, how would that difer from a downloaded MPEG music video? The AMV converter will play the movie file, but when I said to compress it, it gave me an error.....

I wonder if it was too big? It was 3.5 gig, the music video's are usually only about 50 meg or so?

Maybe I need to run the DVD through DVD shrink, and shrink it down to about 25% and then try it?

    Frustrating.......

The major difference is probably the audio. Most DVDs will have AC3 audio, most downloaded music videos probably have mpeg audio. At a guess, the converter doesn't like the AC3 audio. As much as I don't like ipods and believe the are an over-rated rip-off, I would stick with known brands rather than generic or unheard of chinese throw-aways. The software is usually crap, the standards odd, and the documentation non-existent.

Try this. Take one of the files that did convert and play successfully, and open it with g-spot. Take note of the the video and audio codecs used, and the type of settings for bitrate etc.

Once you have these, you have a better idea of what is required, and therefore what other software might work.

  5. Pretty much stuck with this one, it's the budget size....I just have to figure out how to put a movie on it. I know it's possible, that was part of the reason for buying it.

I opened the music files with GSpot, and all of them either said MPEG 1 Layer 3, or MPEG 1 Layer 2 on the Audio Codec. One said it was encoded with ZJMedia MPEG Encoder, others said Encoded by TMPGEncb12a.

Will these programs it listed work for turning a DVD movie into a MPEG?

AMV is a weird format those Chinese players use. Not much is known about it. Try this link:

and look for the "AMV Convert Tool" which may or may not work better than anything else you have tried.
