    Hello all!

I am hoping some of you can help me with a problem I am having. First of all I am not that good with computers so bare with me please

I have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S burner. It came with the computer we bought. The dvds I am using are Sony DVD-R Made in Taiwan 120 min 4.7 GB 1x-8x

Ok I finally figured out how to use torrents. So I downloaded a movie. It was in avi format. I figured out how to burn it, but I chose the highest speed. After the movie was done and I tried to watch it on my dvd player there were numerous glitches/stoppages in it. It would freeze for a split second every 20 seconds or so.

I figured since I picked the highest speed thats why that happened. So I tried it again. This time I chose the lowest speed. This time when I tried to play the dvd it seemed to work, but then about 5 minutes into it the same glitch/stoppage happened. Only this time it wasn't every 20 seconds or so it was every 5-10 minutes.

What I was wondering is if anyone knew why this happened. I know that a dvd player should allow you to burn movies no problem and play them back without stoppages or glitches. So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me!

Try different dvd media brands, see www.nomorecoasters.com www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia .

And are you just burning avi files? or are you making a dvd-video?

DVD Video does not support avi files.
What are you using to convert avi's? What are you using to burn them?

We need to know if you are buring data DVDs and watching AVIs on a DVD player that supports Divx or if you are converting to DVD first. If you are converting, what are you using to convert?

If you are burning data DVDs, you should be aware that on some players, if the bitrate of the Divx clip is too high, it can cause problems. Download Gspot and see what your video bitrate is. Bitrates above 3000 Kbps can cause problems on some players. Also, if your audio is either DTS or AC3 and the video bitrate is over 2000 Kbps, this can also cause a problem. It's an issue with the chip in the DVD player and there's not much you can do about this except maybe consider converting the audio to MP3, but that's a whole other story.

Like I said I dont know alot about computers so I am not sure what I am doing.

All I do is open up my nero startsmart program, click dvd video, drag my avi files that i downloaded from a torrent site and click burn, it burns them because I can watch them just with glitches, so I don't put the avi files through anything to convert them

Stop using Nero. I know it's simple, but it just isn't what it used to be.

The simplest solution for avi to DVD conversion is ConvertXtoDVD. Reliable, quality is OK given the source, and it actually encodes NTSC 23.976 material correctly.

For a free solution, try DVD Flick.

Once you have converted and have the DVD structure on your HDD, use Imgburn to burn the disc. It is by far the best DVD burning software available.

However there are no guarantees. Perhaps the laser in your player is on the way out. Perhaps your player just doesn't like Sony discs. There are many factors that can influence the outcome. Disc quality is usually the first stumbling block, but after that . . . . . . .

  14. I think a more likely answer may be that the avi files are crap. Do they play smoothly on your PC before burning?

This is not really helping us to help you. Since you are not complaining about Nero taking hours to burn your DVDs, it's reasonable to assume that it's making data discs, which means you are watching AVIs on your DVD player. My previous post suggested bit rate issues which could lead to your problem. I suggest you look at it again.

  16. Could this issue be as simple as getting fingerprints on the dvdr or that the dvd player need to be cleaned. My experience is that lower quality dvd players are more sensitive to those two issues with burned dvdr's.

  17. Try playing on another dvd player.

More amazing is how you talked about downloading & it went right past an Admin,

Not all downloads are illegal. Believe me, the admins are on top of this.

Do yourself a favor, and either get a DVD player that also play AVI files without conversion, or do like guns1inger says; ditch Nero, use convertx2dvd.

  20. gunsl1nger had the right idea. Nero is easy to use, but not very good. The files you have probably have a non standard resolution, frame rate, and VBR MP3 audio. DivX and Xvid files are meant for viewing on a PC. When you try to convert them to DVD all kinds of madness can ensue. ConvertXToDVD is THE best solution for this. It does exaclty what you want and does it fairly well. You input your file and it converts the video to a ready to burn VIDEO_TS folder.

But thats what I did exactly. I can't help it if im not a computer nerd like you. There are some on here willing to help me without sounding like a dick.

  22. Calm down. No one is trying to be a d***. We really are trying to help you. You just have to understand that there are TONS of people who come to this site and give very vague descriptions of their problems and expect answers. It's just not that easy.

You are using Nero. You say you tell it to create a video disc. How long does it take to complete the process? Does Nero work for an hour or two and then give you a disc, or burn it immediately and pop the disc out in a few minutes? If you truly are creating video Nero is probably re-encoding the file because downloaded AVI files are not DVD compliant. They need to be changed before they can be made into a DVD. If this is the case it answers your problem. These AVI files usually have a frame rate of 23.97fps. DVD standard is 29.97fps. Plus these files often have VBR MP3 for their audio. Like I said before, DivX and XviD files are meant for viewing on a PC, not TV. So to view them as a DVD the files need to be changed to be DVD standard. Nero does not do a good job of this process. ConvertXToDVD is the best option for you. It was made specifically to take non-standard files and in one step change them into DVD compliant files.

This has nothing to do with being a "computer geek". Most of us have been involved in this stuff for a long time, so we can answer questions. We just need certain details before hand.

Hopefully some of this helps. If not, sorry. Just try not to get angry and use vulgar names.
