I've done some fiddling with Popcorn and DVD2one but I'm not exactly sure which one is best to use (or if there is a better application) for what I want to accomplish.

For the kids we usually take our store bought DVDs and make a movie only copy which is ideal for a 4 year old since they are not too keen sitting through the 8+ previews Disney tosses into every damn DVD they sell.

But for myself, I would like to make a backup of our movies with the menu, movie, and just those extras I want (sometimes I don't care to have commentaries, etc.). I tried this with Popcorn2 but I couldn't get the menu to play, it was just like the "movie only" copies I do with DVD2one. Is there some trick I'm missing? Or am I using the wrong software? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have it but I think DVDRemaster Pro will do what you want.

One more option (not taking into account huge amounts of compression required to make DVD9's fit on DVD5's) is to simply edit the "mapping" of the DVD with MyDVDEdit. With this you can set the "First Play" command to jump straight to the main feature (e.g. Title 1). Pressing the "Menu" button on your player will still get you back to the menu goodness with all the extra features.

    Thanks ArtemisG3. I'll take a look.

I'm fine with keeping some DVD9's as DL (my iMac has a DL burner). But of course DVD5's are much cheaper. Usually for a movie that is very long (say 150 min or more) I tend to use DVD9's because the compression can really affect the playability. But of course those are rare.

Mainly I just want a tool that let's me remaster copies of my DVDs with the stuff I want on it and dump the stuff I don't want. And I still have the original DVD if I ever do want to see that stuff. But most of the time I just want to see the movie so more often than not DVD2one is okay but again having a menu is nice because we can put the DVD into the player and grab the sodas, popcorn, my wife can do her obligatory trip to the bathroom, etc. and then hit "play". I know that sort of sounds stupid, that I want to have the menu just for that, but really that's it and for us it's useful.

So anyway thanks again, I will take a look at MyDVDEdit as well.

Just to confirm for you what Popcorn does. It will not include the menu if you deselect any of the content. That is because Roxio thought it best that the menu not lead to missing content that could freeze the playback.

If you used Toast 7 or 8 and extracted the titles you want from the source VIDEO_TS folder, then you could have Toast author a new menu that points just to those titles. You wouldn't have the original's fancy menu, though.
