What DVD burners besides BenQ will allow the user to change Booktype?

You can get a PIONEER 111D or 112D drive then crossflash it to the 111L or 112L which will then enable bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD MEDIA. If you don't crossflash the drives then you will NOT HAVE bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD MEDIA. The PIONEER drives are already factory set to bitsetting to dvdrom for DUAL LAYER MEDIA.

The LG H10N & H22N drives can flashed with the dangerous brothers hacked firmware to provide bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD MEDIA.

FOR LITEON they have their own tool called SMART BURN that can be used for bitsetting to dvdrom.

Samsung can bitset too, although I believe it won't report it and therefore needs to be manually set each time. I use IMGBurn to bitset and burn.

Is bitsetting the same as changing the book type? I wonder if my LG GSA-H42L can be flashed, if so then I can quit asking all the fool questions about getting the BenQ's to work in an external drive or what other drives can change/manage book type.

Yes the H42L can booktype. I have one and it does. If you haven't already, I recommend using MCSE to remove the rip lock.

I've run into a problem with trying to use my LG H42L to change the book type. I can't find anything in the software that lets me do that. The software CD has the following on it: PowerDVD, PowerProducer, Nero Express with LightScribe Support, InCD, Acrobat Reader, & Drive Manual. The BenQ has something in the QSuite that was easy to locate, but I'm not sure about this LG software.

Configure Nero to set it automatically. Just installed the same drive and the software bundle on one of my systems. It works. ImgBurn has also been updated to allow you to configure to set booktype.

By the way, if your system starts showing lots of background hard disk activity, make sure you didn't install Nero Scout and its database - a bigger system thief than Norton.

Sometimes things have a way of working themselves out when you least expect it. I thought I'd tried everything to get the BenQ drives to work but I found out I was wrong. I did nothing more than set the jumpers to CS & hook them in as a firewire device. I guess the firewire chipset is compatable with the BenQ's. I have them all set up & I'm going to see if there are firmware updates available.

I did. The 1640's firmware was successfully updated from BSHB to BSRB. I couldn't find any firmware for the 1620 Pro that was newer than B7W9. Any suggestions? I still want to be able to use the BenQ software though.

All the BENQ 1620 firmwares are the same, there's no difference with the BENQ 1620 PRO. The pro just had software included with the drive as it was a retail drive. B7W9 was the last firmware from BENQ. For the 1620 you'll only be able to use QSUITE 2.1's qscan and enable WOPC.
It was only from the BENQ 1640 drive that all the tools in QSUITE 2.1 can be accessed.

Here's a link for the BENQ FIRMWARES: (You'll have to join the site in order to download and use the IE TAB feature in MOZILLA FIREFOX browser to view the website. Or just use IE to view the page.

I checked out this web site & there aren't any newer firmware updates than the one's I have. I think that when I flashed the 1620's firmware to B7W9, that allowed it to access everything in QSuite. I think I'll kick back & be happy with the fact that I got the drives to work, in spite of the tech guy at BenQ saying that the internal drives won't work externally.
