  1. Hello, i just got as a present a dvp-ns50p player, on the box and on the player, it saids its a region 4 player . When i try to play a region-free PAL disc it shows Black n white image.
Then i tried to play a Region 1 dvd and it plays just fine!
Should the the region hack listed here https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Sony+DVP-NS50P fix the PAL problems ? (Im skeptical about this hacks ,i dont want to brick it)

One more thing its not a tv issue, since i conected another dvd player (multi region) and the pal disc plays just fine

    Thanks in advance!

You are confusing regions and recording types. Regions are meant to control where (geographic locations) discs can be played. Recording types (NTSC or PAL) are the format the video in recorded (look up NTSC and PAL in the glossary).

Since the player apparently plays a region 1 disc, it sounds like it is already region free or the disc you used had no region coding.

However, region 1 discs are NTSC...NOT PAL. The black and white image issue, sounds like the typical problem encountered by your TV not supporting PAL playback. Your player is most likely reading the disc and outputting PAL video to your TV which most likely doesn't support PAL format. Most players allow you to choose your TV type (NTSC/PAL/AUTO). This should be adjusted according to your type of TV.

I'm guessing that the TV output of your DVD-NS50P DVD player is set to NTSC. You need to change this to either AUTO or PAL for your television to see PAL DVDs in color with this player.

    In simple terms:
Region Codes and NTSC/PAL have nothing to do with each other.

  5. Ok lets see:

I guess the player its mutli region, beacuse it plays a Region 1 only original dvd without problem, even tough the box shows up as region 4.

PAL Movies plays black n white, even a multi region pal dvd.

jman98: I think you are right, but the player menu doest have an option for pal/ntsc/auto output, or i cat find it !!

Krispy Kritter: The tv supports PAL movies, because i tried another dvd player and works fine.

    Any ideas ?

There are different types of PAL. Uruguay uses "PAL-N" which has a colour subcarrier of 3.58Mhz instead of the more usual 4.43Mhz. It is possible your Sony doesn't support PAL-N while your other player does.

Sony sells this player in the USA. I found the product manual with a search at Google. There is no option to change the TV output. The manual says that this player only supports NTSC DVD and will not play PAL DVDs. I think the problem is with your player. If you are really sure that this player is a region 4 player, you probably need to call Sony and talk to them. I wouldn't expect much help from Sony, but it's better than nothing.

This post is a really good example of why many people won't buy anything made by Sony now. There are just too many problems.

The bigger they are...the harder(to make) fall. The big name well-known brands are not really known to be hackable OR are they known for converting on the fly between formats.

Some Region 4 countries do use NTSC but not the one the original poster lives in.

This is not a brand issue, many other brands of player made for NTSC countries will not play PAL.

  10. Sorry took me a while to get back on my post.
jman98: yes its a region 4 player, its says in the box, and in the back of it. But it plays Region 1 only dvd's too (I do some amazon dvd shopping ) . So I guess its multi-region , or maybe region 1 and 4 only?

Well Here in Uruguay, even tough its pal-n country, its only for tv. The whole market of dvd here and argentina too its Region 4 NTSC. All the tv's that are sold here are multi-system.

So maybe the player is set to play only any-region NTSC

So its not a tv issue, since another player plays just fine PAL dvds in the same tv. What i dont get is that usually when you put a PAL source in a NTSC player, the image is all fucked up. But here its shows as black n white, sounding like a tv issue.

Maybe like ntscuser said, the sony player is outputting another pal format which the tv doesn't support, And the other player i have outputs the right pal format.

So im going to try the player in another tv , Thanks for all the answers and interest in the topic!

    I'll keep posting progress.

Your DVD player is outputting an NTSC color signal at a frequency where the TV set would expect to find PAL (or vice-versa). If your player has a choice of 3.58 and 4.43 color frequencies, try changing it and see if that helps?

It could be that the player is set to play only any-region NTSC like you said. The documentation seems to say that this player can't play PAL DVDs.

That's interesting that Argentina and Uruguay sell NTSC DVDs. I know that Brazil does too. I always assumed Brazil did it because it allows their DVDs to exported around the world. Some sources say that 95% of the DVD players in the world can correctly play NTSC DVDs. Hong Kong and Macau also use PAL TV but their DVDs are almost always NTSC. There is a lot of business in exporting Asian films to the USA, so I assumed that they used NTSC just to make playback easier for foreigners. In many PAL countries, TVs are multi-standard so it is not difficult to support both PAL and NTSC playback. If a country makes its DVDs in NTSC format, almost everybody can play them and they can be exported with few problems.

I suppose it is possible that the Sony player might be outputting another PAL format. I can't say that this definitely can't happen, but I've never heard of this happening. My best guess would be that the player doesn't support PAL at all as the American manual says.

  13. jman98: Yeah and in all dvd rental stores 99% of dvd are Region 4 NTSC, some Region 1 and 4 NTSC and as i said the ones you buy here are Region 4 NTSC dvd's too

WELL GUYS THE DVP-NS50P PLAYS PAL !, So i guess the specs that hech54 link pointed were right, Still i don't know whats wrong with my room tv, or whats wrong with the player. Or what kind of PAL format is outputting.
I did some work and created a graphical story for better understanding, here it goes:

This is the back of the dvd box and the back of the player:

    Problem:

Trying another player, showing the tv supporting PAL:

Trying the dvp-ns50p in another tv, (no luck,I guess it doesn't support pal?):

Without giving up,I decided to try the dvp-ns50p in another TV:

WOOOO, COLOR ! , The model of the philips tv is 29PT5645/77

So whats wrong with the other tv's ? They are multi-system too, using the other player gives no problem, so whats special about the dvp-ns50p . It's outputting some weird pal format that is only supported by that i philips tv i tried ?

What you guys think ?, it blew me away seeing color on the philip tv, also got me really mad, so mad i wanted to show you guys exactly whats going on with pictures!

Alkalinelito, I suspect your Sony DVD player is outputting PAL-I which is supported by the Philips while your 20 inch TV set supports "PAL-M" and "PAL-N", neither of which is true PAL.
    Quote Quote
  15. ntcuser: yes, and also the 29 inch second tv i tried supports only PAL-N/PAL-M/NTSC. And I just tried a fourth tv 14 inch, which let me force the encoding system ( Since the other's tv were automatic), and i forced PAL-N and PAL-M and both showed picture in black n white.

So you are right about the sony player outputting to another pal format ! (PAL-I ? )

    Specs from Philips manual: (http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/2/29pt5645_77/29pt5645_77_pss_aen.pdf)

So the Sony dvp-ns50p is outputting to either PAL B or G (Or maybe PAL-I like you said)

As im seeing in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL Many countries in Europe/Asia use that.

  16. I know this topic is almost closed, but im still thinking if i can do something about the dvp-ns50p, for playing in pal-n/m . Maybe someone knows some hack for selecting the outputting encoding system.

First of all this is the player selled here in Latin America, Uruguay,Argentina,Brazil, and Its region 4. So why it can't output in the pal systems used in the region ?

Anyway I KNOW the tv enconding system has nothing to do with the regions. Im probably going to say a lot of crap here, but anyway: But what if the player is only set to Region 1 and 4 only?????(Can be true since its what is mostly used here in arg and uru)- ( The pal disc i was trying is an All region) . What if the players "fetchs" what color encoding system to output based on the region of the disc ? (I dont have a region 2,3 only dvd to try), and thats why it's outputting to some weird pal format (For the region).
And maybe doing an all-region hack , will enable the player to output in pal format used here. Or maybe some other hack.

    What you guys think?

There's no simple code hack for a Sony player.

If the player was sold for use in Uruguay it should output the colour system used in Uruguay.

The region-coding of the disc makes no difference to the colour output of the player unless it has been hacked with third-party firmware intended for use in another country in which case it may no longer output colour from certain combinations of region and TV system.

You say the Sony can also play discs from Region-1 which suggests it has already been hacked in which case the manufacturer's original specification and warranty are now null & void. You should take the matter up with the person who sold you the player.

That's good. I'm assuming it can play Region-4 NTSC titles with no problems on your existing TV? If that is the case you have very little cause for complaint but I'm afraid you will find it either complicated or expensive to have the player modified now that you have posession of it.
