I'm using the AutoGK rip TV to AVI method and I keep getting a Virtualdub error message. I've followed the steps exactly and it runs until, I guess. the virtualdub portion.

    The message is as follows:

    Virtualdub Error Video Compression Error:
The source image format is not acceptable (error code-2)

Any ideas? I've tried it on 2 dvd movies (not TV shows) with the same result, but I don't think that would matter.

what version of autogk and divx?

    maybe step 3 from
The source image format is not acceptable (error code -2)
There are three main causes for this to happen:

    1. You are trying to compress a video in a format that is not supported by the codec. This will usually mean that the frame height and width are incorrect or that the color depth is not valid. To see what restrictions there are for a codec go to video-->compression and select the codec. The codec restrictions will now appear in a box right of the middle in this window.

    2. It happens when trying to play the file in VirtualDub. This is the result of a codec that is trying to decompress a video stream, which it actually cannot handle. This shouldn't be happening, but there are a few codecs (e.g. Panasonic DV) that will try to decompress anything they can get their hands on. Check the file info in VirtualDub and look up the codec used for decompression. Then uninstall/disable this codec and open the file again and see if it plays. It might be possible that with opening the file you will get another type of error message, which will be dealt with now.

    3. This error is also common with DivX and can have two main possible causes for it. First of all, it is recommended that in the advanced setting of the DivX config, you disable "Do not prompt with errors and warnings". Why this setting is not disabled by default I don't know, complain to DivX about it. If you now start your encode again an error message will appear. Usually there are problems with the logfile or the dimensions of your video are not correct. With DivX hardware profiles enabled, there are maximum resolutions you can encode with (e.g. 720x576 is the maximum res for the Home Theatre profile). It could also be that you have issues as described at number 1.

I had the output set to DivX instead of Xvid. I'm going to try it with the Xvid settings and see how that goes.

What program is item #1 referring to in your post? I can't figure out where to find Video--> compression to select the codec. My DivX config Utility doesn't have anything.

    using AutoGK v2.40

Tried encoding with Xvid setting and same error. After 1 hour, the log read:
    EXCEPTION: Open avi failed.

ok. I got it to work. I don't quite know if it had something to do with other codec (DivX, Xvid and another AVI codec pack) or not, but differences from the 'how to' was that I slected 1CD (700MB) in the predefined size and in the advanced settings to auto for both the resolultion size and the audio type and I used the Xvid codec instead of DivX that I was trying to use before. I did 2 DVD's that ended up at 717MB each, but it took 3 hours for each conversion.

Is that typical for dvd movie conversions? one movie was 2hrs 19min and the other was 1 hour 20min.

I'm going to try to set it to a custom size and see what happens.

  7. I did 2 DVD's that ended up at 717MB each,

Are you sure it wasn't 717,xxx KB instead (which is 700-701 MB)? AutoGK doesn't go over like that, unless you at some point installed a newer XviD over an older one, without first uninstalling the older one. Try and burn them to CD. I'm betting they'll burn just fine.

    yes, 717,xxxkb.

I'm getting audio sync issues, though. Not a consistent lag, but different throughout the movie. If I fix the first instance of a sync problem, there is another problem further on into the movie. Is this common with these conversions?

I found the 'fix audio sync problems 102' article, but it requires Cool Edit Pro. Is there a free version or a free equivalent to Cool Edit Pro?

  9. I'm getting audio sync issues, though.

The audio synch issues in most cases have to do with an improper decrypt. I don't know what the movie is or how you decrypted it, but if it's a new DVDR of a new movie that might have one of the newer copyright protections on it, it might be best to decrypt using RipIt4Me in Movie Mode.

Is this common with these conversions?

Nope, not supposed to happen if you've started with a DVD and decrypted properly. If your source is some downloaded AVI, then anything might happen.

I'm using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and I've got it set up as per rita.lt's guides. It is a little different than the guide on this site as far as what is checked and not.

I'm decrpypting my own DVD movies that I bought so I can make AVI's to put onto my Archos PVP.

I guess the only thing to do is try the DVD Decrypter with the other settings and also try ripit4me.

I've downloaded and ran RipiT4Me, but apparently it is no longer 'in development' and I can't get to the guides site.

One thing that I found suprising was that when I clicked on the final button on ripit4me, it opened up DVD Decrypter - the program that manono said was causing my troubles.

  12. Yes, RipIt4Me uses DVD Decrypter. And again, if these are newish movies, particularly movies released by Sony/Columbia, then the chances are excellent that they are using ARccOS protection, and using DVD Decrypter alone will result in out-of-synch audio. I'll retire now, as you seem to want a second opinion. Good luck.
