I just moved a Pioneer DVR-111D into a USB external bay, and burned a few discs, and now it keeps stalling and timing out during the burn process.

Using Nero 7 and DVD Shrink 3.2, just updated the drive firmware, and am on my way to pick up some better quality DVDR's. The Nero Burn Log is as follows... and ideas? I'm a bit concered about the Queue again later errors...

Yeah, the drive is set to master.

Also, when the Burner freezes up, the open tray button stops working until the drive is powered down, and sometimes it even seems to disappear from My Computer.

    gh0st,

All those atapi error codes of 000000 near the end are from the burning software losing contact with the drive, kind of like when you lose someone on a cell phone. Nero sends a sequence of commands to the drive, basically saying "Hello, are you still there?", but when the drive doesn't answer, all Nero can do is terminate the burn (hangs up the phone). Almost certainly, the drive was also trying to send information to Nero, but when it never hears back from Nero, it just sits there and waits.

It sounds like you've used that drive successfully (internally), so the problem isn't likely to be the drive. Nero dutifully did everything it reasonably could to re-establish contact, so it's not the software. Most likely, you have a bad connection somewhere, a faulty cable, or the external box you put the drive in isn't working correctly.

Since these were your first posts here, welcome to VideoHelp.

    Thanks VegasBud

I should mention that after the drive locks up in mid burn, being completely unresponsive to the open tray button, I believe on this attempt that the burn log is from, I got tired of waiting for it to time out as it had been doing, and flipped the power switch on the drive to hurry things along.

I'll try a different USB cable, and have also updated to the latest firmware, and gotten some better blanks, Verbatim DVD+R's, and I plan on trying to burn again at a much lower speed. If it fails again, I'll let it time out and post a burn log with out my impatient meddling.

If that doesn't work, I'll return the drive bay and try another.

Oh yeah, it did burn three good discs out of ten attempts on the USB bay, so it worked a little of the time anyway.

  6. gh0st,

I noticed your computer is kinda old. The USB port on the PC may be version 1.1 or even 1.0. USB 1.1 may not be fast enough to transfer data to your burner.

Well, it's a three month old Dell Laptop, so it isn't all THAT old.

I know computers go obsolete fast, but come on!

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure it's USB 2.0.

Anyway, did all the previously listed stuff, and tried burning to a RW disc, wasting DVD-R's is getting a little old. Burned a x1 speed and the same thing happened. Burn log as follows:

    gh0st,

Just for completeness, the log does show that USB 2.0 is being used.

The same exact problem is still occurring. If you tried a different USB cable, and checked the drive connections in the external box, that pretty much leaves the external box itself as the source of the problem, unless you have had problems with other USB devices on that computer (not very likely...just being thorough).

By the way, I probably should have mentioned before that with that particular error, the media isn't the problem. It's purely a problem of the drive and the computer losing the ability to communicate sometime during the burning process.

    External enclosure chipset is likely.

I'm thinking you are right Lordsmurf.

After doing more searching on the net, I've found NUMEROUS people with similar problems when running WinXP, an External USB drive Bay with USB 2.0.

No one has quite pegged it down yet, although ALI chipsets on the enclosure seem to be at least partially responsible.

Apparently, running through a USB 1.o hub may help, but will slow things down. I'll give that a try and update here.

Has firmware been updated? I know there are different TDB firmwares for external and internal drives from the TDB link from CDFreaks, and I'd guess there'd be different official firmwares depending on how drive is connected although I've not used any official firmwares since testing the original before cross flashing mine to 111L.

Yeah, one of the first things I tried was updating the firmware. Still no go, and I can't seem to find my old USB hub to try the USB 1.0 thing.

Looks like I'll be taking the enclosure back and exchanging it for a Firewire version, which seems to solve the majority of these problems.

Geez, I remember back in the good ol' days of computing when stuff actually worked... It seems like every single thing I've done with computers lately results in some kind of incompatability issue that nobody understands.

I mean seriously, Windows Vista doesn't even support the middle mouse button for Logitech??!? And this is an upgrade???

    OK, rant mode off...

Well exchanged the Drive bay for a Firewire/USB 2.0 combo enclosure, and didn't even need to switch to firewire. Burns like a dream through the USB now.

Thanks all for your advice and information.
