    What software do I need to change an avi file to mpeg file so I can burn the mpeg to a dvd?

    Depends of what kind of AVI type file? There are many, many formats that fall under that container definition. But you are likely asking about Divx or Xvids. Try ConvertXToDVD. It can also handle other formats and is well worth the small cost. There is also the older freeware version, DivxToDVD still available.

    but its take to many hours just only for i AVI file.

    is it any better freeware that can do better?

    Get a faster CPU - that's about the only way to substantially improve conversion speeds. 1.8 GHz is pretty slow by todays standards.
