OK, so i have decided to join the many who back up their old vhs tapes, to saved them for future viewing. At first I didn't really know how difficult or easy it would be. Now I would say that it's neigh on impossible. I've spent a total of 8 (yes, eight!) hours trying to get a successful feeb from my VCR to my laptop. All I got so far is nothing - blank screen, no sound nothing!

    I realise that some people are saying that they have a bad picture quality, or bad sound - I wish I did. Basically i will try to tell you what ive done so far below;

I've just brought the Kworld DVD Maker USB 2.0 pack, including the 'capture box' and 2 CDs - Installation CD & Ulead movie factory CD. I have triied using both CDs and they both seem as rubbish as each other - and help pages / support - forget about it!! basically no existant.

i have tried wiring it up both through the tv and dirtect to the VCR. I have been sticking the yellow composite wire into the RF out port on the VCR (where i would usually plug it into the tv. nothing. I have tried using it with the sound cables in, but seeing as i cant even get a picture, i dont suppose i can get sound.

basically any and every combination ive tried i end up with the same result - a black screen. (the vhs is playing all the while im doing this)

i know that a lot of ppl are having trouble, so please could someone give me a step by step guide of how they set theirs up to get theie VHS to their pc, to be put onto dvd.

ive checked all the options/tick boxes and they all look ok? also i dont think its my laptop as its pretty new - about 4 months old.

im using xp if that helps

    please please any suggestions....

    Thanks
    ross

    1. First I have to ask the obvious, do you have USB2 on your computer?

    2. If it came with it's own software for capture use that instead of Ulead. Import the footage into Ulead after capture.

    3. If it has both s-video and composite(RCA) inputs then you might have to switch between the two.

    4. Make sure you have the latest drivers and updates.

  3. Not sure. Try checking your video overlay settings in your vid card controls. Maybe not set up right? AFAIK, the audio would hook into audio in port of your sound card unless Kworld specifies other. What are your source options in the drop down Kworld menu? Coalman's right about Ulead. Just use it after capture wold be my guess,

1: Usb2 requires sp2 for xp , and you also need the updated drivers for your systems motherboard .

    2: Installation (after driver update / sp2 install) .

A: Install packages the came with device first .
    B: Shut down system .
C: Connect device to pc .
D: Pc recognizes device (may request cd once more) .
    E: Reboot system .

F: Go through setting up device defaults for video input type (use vtr mode) .
G: Bring audio in via pcs line-in is best , set product to record audio from line-in .
H: Check video in on pc .

Make sure video from vcr can be viewed on tv , then connect this line to devices video input .

Should be good to go .

    ----

Warning 1: Check usb2 products max amp useage rating prior to connecting the device to pc .

If more than 1 amp required , get "powered" usb2 hub to connect between this device and pc .
A usb2 powered hub capable of supplying 2 amps , with own power adapter , like those made by belkin , is best .

The last thing you want to appear on screen is the "usb reset" warning , caused by overload of current drawn via the usb chipset , recordings go south from here , in quality , and other system problems will soon show up (overheating addon gpu's) .

It is also advised that when you go to record , that prior to the pc being swtiched on , all other usb2 / ieee devices currently connected to the system be removed first to minimize the possibility of conflicts , and overloading the current supply via system usb .

Hi thanks everyone. so far no luck but i'll tell you what ive done.

checked that ive got usb2.0 which i have (xp with service package 2)

checked the device manager under 'imaging devices' / 'usb 2820 video' and it says 'This device is working properly.'

A: Installed packages the came with device.
    B: Shut down system.
    C: Connectted device to pc.
D: Pc recognizes device (may request cd once more).
    E: Rebooted system.

Made sure video from vcr can be viewed on tv , then connectted it straight to the pc via composite cable.

    can you tell me how i carry out the following as these are the only things that i havent done (to my knowledge);

F: Go through setting up device defaults for video input type (use vtr mode) .
G: Bring audio in via pcs line-in is best , set product to record audio from line-in .
H: Check video in on pc .

    i think g & h i can do when i get that far, but how do i do F?

    thanks again

ok black screen, did you push the record button anyway, record 5 minutes stop, then check the output file

you might have and input and record capabilites and have a video display problem of the captured input signal

or you might have a device that is DOA and need to return it..

if there is no signal to capture, the device is faulty

if you have a capture file that will play, then you have a PC display overlay problems, and may need to reintall directX your going to need at least version 9 and up
