I've run into a couple of problems using AviTricks. I installed the program on a bunch of computers in lab. All of them run Windows 2000 OS, SP 4 (I think).

When importing a video file, in the property box is a line that "no audio track is available." As a result, the audio that goes with the video does not play when watching the video in the Preview window. I had to install the K-Lite (full) codec bundle on the computers just to get the video to play in the Preview. But, the audio won't play. On one computer, though, the audio/video play fine.

I've been trying to figure out which codec(s) are missing, but it's become a tedious task, and I don't have time to keep installing codec after codec. I installed the ac3-acm codec, but that didn't help.

Any idea on which specific audio codec(s) I'm missing? Is there an audio bundle I can install?

    -----------------------------

My second problem is with a scene in my timeline not running in the video Preview. For example, I'll import the video and cut the first scene. Then I import the video again and cut the second scene. When I play the video on the timeline, after scene 1 plays, the "drag" bar keeps moving to the right but scene 2 doesn't play. I just see the end of scene 1 (stopped) in the Preview.

Usually, when this happens a message eventually displays reading: "The preview video frame was skipped because your computer CPU was overloaded. The saved video frames will be complete and normal."

I haven't figured out a workaround for this. Sometimes just deleting the scenes and creating them again solves the problem. Other times it doesn't. I tried closing and re-opening the program, along with rebooting the computer, usually with no luck. I've had this happen a couple of times on different computers -- one with Windows 2000 and one with XP.

Other troubleshooting I've tried is to pull the scenes out of my Group. Sometimes they'll play fine and other times they won't, once outside of the Group. At other times, I've pulled them out of the Group, and then put them back in, and they played. However, this "fix" only works temporarily, because soon after that, the problem returns.

Thanks for any help on these issues.

  2. Load the file(s) in GSpot - you will see the codec and if you have it installed.
Codec packs (K-Lite) make more problems than they solve. If you want to ruin your system - then keep it. I would recommend to get rid of it. Install only codecs that you need. GSpot would help you to find what you need.

    Thanks for the help.

I've never had any problems with the K-Lite codecs, at least none I'm aware of. I ended up figuring out which audio codec was missing. (The answer was sort of right in front of me the entire time but I didn't see it until after the fact.)

I still don't know why the Preview sometimes doesn't play the video when importing the video a second, third, fourth (etc.) time. The picture in the window just freezes, though the bar keeps moving. This is happening a lot on and off. I thought it may be the size of the video being imported (more than 300 mb), but I cut it up into smaller parts (10 mb) and am still having the problem.

Indications are the K-Lite isn't causing the problem. I have AviTricks installed on other computers that don't have K-Lite installed. For those, I installed just two codecs -- one to get the audio to play and one to get the video to display/play in the Preview. I'm still encountering the same problem on those non-K-Lite computers.

I don't know if it's the one video codec (XVid MPEG-4), AviTricks, the video file, or the computers/OS. I don't have XVid MPEG-4 installed on the computer I use in the lab, and I have the same problem with the video Preview freezing after playing the first scene. So, I'm guessing the codec isn't the problem, unless all of the video codecs I've used so far are each causing the problem.
