  1. I have a xVid AVI file I'd like to edit down and then convert to a file I can upload to youtube.

What can I use to edit xVid? Should I convert xVid to another file type before editing?

I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2 for editing.

    Any suggestions?

    What kind of editing?
If it's just hard cuts, you can use vdub, or avimux-gui.
If it's more complex than that. Convert to DV at least. And why not lossless if you have the space.

vdub and a dv codec (canopus, cedocida, panasonic)
    install codec.
open vdub, open avi, select full processing and select DV compression.
You'll have to rezise to 720x576 or 720x480. You'll have to have a framerate of 25fps or 29.97fps

or use vdub to go to huffyuv.
I think for adobe (which I've never used) you might want to click the configure button when selecting huffyuv and selecting the 'always suggest RGB...' option.
