  1. Is it possible to capture a feed from an old analogue security camera and then in turn broadcast it via the web?

If it is possible, do any of the solutions use flash on the viewer side to access the feed or do they all need a special plug-in that the user will need to download first?

I am going for maximum ease-of-use for the viewer (thus Flash).

    Thank you.

  2. SFAIK, Flash is completely unsuitable for this purpose.

All Windows PC's can play an MPG-1 file. Anything reasonably modern will play a WMV file. No additional software required.

Your capture hardware may very well dictate your choice of playback type, or re-encoding may be necessary.

Most systems designed for this purpose allow Real-Time viewing of the camera output over the Internet. There are several companies making dedicated PC's for this purpose. Main feature is a multiple input, real-time encoding card.

  4. ATI or Hauppage for consumer grade, single-input card. Multiplexor can be used for several cameras, but expensive, as are multiple-input cards.

The dedicated boxes usually save an MPG file and use a lower-res, lower-FPS AVI for real-time viewing. Specialized hardware and software.

There are WebCam softwares which could likely be adapted for your situation, though recording and viewing may not be simultaneously available.

Find the software FIRST which offers the capability of what you want, then get a capture card that will work with it. You may only need video-input capability and not actual capture.

The actual type of cable connector available on the camera may very well dictate all other decisions. Or you may need a new camera.

  5. Any advice as to a software solution that may work for my needs?

I don't even know where to start when doing a Google search.

Thank you for your patience with my 'noob-ness'!

  6. there is a program called Window Vision, designed for security cameras. Several clients have this and it seems to work well, both in-house and for Internet viewing.

If you are only using one camera, and it has a standard connection, there are various methods to create a WebCam with it fairly inexpensively.

Google search Security Camera Software and Webcam Software.
