Hi everybody,
Almost all new dvd home theaters comes with a hdmi connectivity. Is this hmdi connections only for picture and sound output to a tv (or receiver), or it can be used as input for sound??
I need to now if I will be able to connect Hd dvd player to this home theater through hdmi cable and receive real 5.1 surround sound ??? (dts or dd)
Thanks in advance.

Yes, if your receiver has hdmi inputs and outputs you will have DD and DTS sound.

It is not typical receiver, it is home theater all in one, with one hdmi connection.
I am wondering if there is a POSSIBILITY that manufacturer of this device did not inted that hdmi port for input , but only for output.
Or it must be both: input and output like EURO SCART connection. -
I suspect it is output only, there would be no need for a HDMI input without also having an HDMI output.

It would be best to get clarification on what exactly we are talking about.
What do you mean by "home theater"?
To me, home theater is my dvd player, A/V receiver, and my big screen TV.Google is your Friend -
Sorry for the late response.
When I said Home Theater I meant All in one HT. Dvd player and amplifier with radio in one box.
There are a lot of models , e.g. Philips hts3115, Samsung http75
I downloaded manual for samsung and on the page connecting external component there is nothing said about hdmi port.
That is way I asked the question in general - Have you seen any all in one HT that can receive sound through hdmi ? -
no

HDMI in is a huge risk.
They may try to sell one that works for upscaling DVD players but may not work with HDCP protected source. First year HD/BD DVD media have HDCP turned off. All HDTV sets are required to respond to HDCP and refuse high def connection without an authentication by valid key.
Demand a money back guarantee from receiver makers that the unit will pass HDMI with HDCP. Get it in writing.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

here you can read about the cables whar they are for
IEEE 1394 is the only output and input i know about that do both but why do you need it for sound it doesnt really make any sence to me. sound is already in dolby surround thru regular sound cables
