On some of the dvd-r's I have been recording on, I will occasionally get an error message saying the disc needs cleaning or it may be damaged. Sometimes the discs will eventually work again if I try several times to load them, but some just won't. I have used Memorex, Fuji, TDK, Maxell and have had the same troubles with all. Is thsia common problem with theis model?
I called Toshiba and they're sending me a firmware update.

I also have D-4 never experience that but I used fairly decent disc panasonic & sony. I used only 4x. If they have a firmware then others must have complaint about same experience. I don't understand why they would let you download the firmware.....

The firmware update is for finalizing problems, unless there's a newer one. Sounds like you've got burner problems, or maybe a dirty lens.

Recording to RAW or -RW will work perfectly, it's only the -R's that sometimes will get the error.

I've got a D-R4 that does the same thing. The firmware update didn't fix it. The update is for finalization problems with 16x discs. There may be a newer update, I don't know.
