Just installed my new Plextor PX-755 dvd writer in place of my older Lite-on 851, and everything seems to work just fine. However, the Plextor came with a 'Drive support disc' which I have not installed. Do I need to install this, and why ?

I don't think I would install it. But I would check it out with Windows Explorer and see what is on it. I suspect freeware/crippleware from some manufacturers. It may be a version of Nero OEM. Or some time limited antivirus programs. Or maybe something useful, but I doubt it.

Well Plextor is is the Roxio camp and I doubt you need that. But Plextor also supplies a lot of useful tools, which might be what's on the disc.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
PlexEraser™ is a data destruction utility that makes a recorded CD-R or DVD disc unreadable.*

SecureRecording lets you write on a CD-R disc and protect the data with a password.*

GigaRec™ allows high capacity storage of up to 900 MB on a 700 MB CD-R disc. With this advanced feature, you can increase the maximum writing capacity up to 30%.*

Q-Check™ diagnostic suite is used to verify the quality of blank and recorded media.*

VariRec™ provides users with unprecedented control over the burn process.*

SilentMode™ enables users to vary tray load/unload speed, spin up/down speed and write/ read speeds.*

Black disc tray minimizes jitter and reduces C1 error rates. Optimized PCB circuits near the power supply decrease noise and provide clean power to the drive, improving both jitter and deviation levels.

Powerful Software that Works for You

PlexTools® Professional software allows you to control powerful functions with an easy-to-use interface and includes Plextor premium features for AUTOSTRATEGY, PoweRec, PlexEraser, SecureRecording, GigaRec, Q-Check, VariRec, and SilentMode.

I find Plextools handy for it's ability to Booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM
    for increased compatibility...
and the ability to unlock the drive for read speeds above 2X.

I'd install PlexTools - the rest is up to you - it's the only software that I've used consistently with any of the Plextors that I run (3), and is reliable for verifying burns, etc.

I really didn't like the Roxio software, but the choice is yours.

Be certain to check the plextor websites (both US and Europe) for firmware updates on a regular basis.
