    The drive is an external LG GSA-E10L, connected via USB.
    When the drive's door is open, My Computer shows it as a DVD-RAM drive, but as soon as I load a DVD+R, it changes to CD-Drive.

    My internal DVD/CD-RW shows up correctly in My Computer

    Nero doesn't seem to have any problems burning to the external drive, but Roxio does.
    Any ideas how to get the drive recognized properly?
    It shows up fine in Device Manager, and uninstalling/reinstalling the driver hasn't changed anything.
    Should I just ignore the issue and forget about using Roxio (I like the Drag to disk feature)?

    Nero and Roxio do not play well together.
    I'm not a big fan of either Nero or Roxio but I'd dump Roxio. Their older "packet writing" software was complete garbage...garbage enogh to keep ISOBuster in business. Just yesterday I had to rescue data from a Roxio created data disc....with ISOBuster.

    i'd ditch both roxio and nero, to opt for imgburn and vso copytodvd.

    all my dvd-rw's show up as cd drives when any blank is inserted, seems to be window's "thing".

  4. Roxio= out of date to recognize your new drive
    Nero= Up to date

    Btw, XP already has Roxio, so you might have overwrote some files if your version is old.

    Btw, my drives show as CD drives too but work fine.

    My better half and I just want to share our experience with an annoying problem. We too had the situation where Nero was seeing DVDs as CDs on our XFX NForce 680i LT SLI motherboard based computer. Here's how we resolved it.

    We have another Window XP computer in which Nero correctly sees DVDs, so we decided to compare the DVD driver files in both Device Managers. The XFX computer had one extra driver file, GEARAspiWDM.sys. Doing some research online, we discovered this file appears as a result of installing iTunes 8. We suspected this was the problem. See Ed Bott's article at http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/an-inside-look-at-apples-sneaky-itunes-8-upgrade/536. (FYI, Ed Bott reports Apple has issued a revised download for iTunes 8 intended to correct past problems.)

    We decided to take the extreme route and reinstalled Windows XP (we recently reinstalled Windows XP because of malware and viruses). After that Nero correctly saw DVD discs. Again people prove the Internet is a conduit for shedding light on issues. Thanks.

    aedipuss said it right: Ditch Nero et.al. and use Imgburn - it's likely the best burner out there, bar none.
