Okay, im a complete "Noob" when it comes to capturing to be perfectly honest.
However, I recently decided I wanted to capture footage from various Xbox 360 games I play and found out about Capture Cards. Capturing TV footage would also be nice, but is not important to me.
I wanted some advice and perhaps links to high quality Capture Cards that I could purchase. I have considered perhaps a Pinnacle or Canopus Capture Card, but I want confirmation these would be able to capture Game footage.
Note: My budget is around the £50 - £125 / $100 - $240 region.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I used a Pinnacle card to capture from my PS2, the trick was splitting the signal so I could play as well without having to use the little screen on my computer.
-
Thanks for the reply.
What card did you use?
And how well did it work?
Anybody else have advice? -
im an noob at capturing too.. i'll bump this...
I want to record myself playing halo 2 on a xbox 360...
I have PCTV rave.. not sure if i can do it....
someone help us noobs
heh -
What the ? , splitting the signal is done using a vcr .
Connect xbox through a vcr so its displayed on tv .
Connect video out from vcr to capture card .
Use a stereo headphone conversion cable to connect vcr audio output to pc linein only
Provides clearest quality (mixed signals degrade picture quality)
Set capture program to VTR mode , record audio from pc linein , set format (pal / nstc) , and required final format it is to be recorded into ... avi , mpeg , or other .
Hit the record button on capture program .
Go back to xbox and tv , and play game .
----
I had it playing back on the tv when my brother came back to play , and he couldnt figure out why he was not going where he was trying to go , until I showed him what I was doing .
----
As for the capture device , that may need some thought as most require 2gig pcu , and xp now .
Avermedia make superb capture devices , which will supply very high quality for output to dvd later .
Hd recording devices are limited for now , and quite expensive .
Connecting the xbox 360 to dvd recorders represent alot of issues .
----
Got to see what those video / audio outputs on my tv do .
I'll fire up the old xbox , already done it with the ps2 .
I'm waiting for halo 3 ... what a rip off ... get to end of halo 2 , and ... to be continued ... you butt holes .
While I wait , its onto pariah ... and the cheat codes ... bloody grenade chuckers , I hate them buggers . -
hi dude
any chance you got any messengers?
i got a lot to ask and verify lol hehe -
Well , you people just cost me a bucket of $$$ today ... got the :
Xbox360 pack - Gears of war
Wireless controller + Hard drive + Media remote + Erthernet cable + Component hd av cable .
Plus 5 years warrantee
Total = $740.00
----
Warning , it is not as simple to setup as the old xbox ... hardware fine ... menu to setup region , time , and everything else under the damn sun ... before I go to the game .
And who was the spazz that put a a sticky wrapper across the tray .
----
Gears of war includes hdtv support of 480p / 720p / 1080i .
The xbox will not allow some settings when connected via av , so I had chosen pal 60 and 480p as setup .
The pc recording setup was the same as I mentioned before .
Unfortunately , because the pc had to be moved in order to see everything and to work all systems at once , I had not connected the audio to line in by accident .
But here's the start to gears of war , where I get aka very soon ... too many buttons ... wheres the duck and run button .

Hi guys,
I'm having major issues finding something to capture X360 footage with too. I live in Australia so we use PAL-60 too, I think that's where most of the headaches come from. Take a look at my post here, and have a look at the image.
https://forum.videohelp.com/topic333539.html
That's from capturing with an ADS Tech Video Xpress USB2 capture device... every video format except PAL-60 flickers, and PAL-60 'splits' the image like this. Anyone seen it before? Am I wasting my time with this capture device?
Cheers. -
Lyntonius , yes I did see your post .
What have you set the video out connector to ?
Mines set to TV , not HDTV ... Im waiting for the sony unit to come down a bit more before I upgrade to HD .
I can either hook directly to the tv via rca , but I prefer to go the vcr way (multiple inputs / outputs)
Strange that my tv has video / audio out ... will have to test those later .
Then go into menu of console , set to pal 60 at 480p , and it shouldnt be a problem to cap from .
I didnt see what the affect would be at 720p , but it would be utterly useless to cap 1080i simply because there are very few capture device's able to record in such scale .
I am just wondering with that ads box , that you might not have it setup correctly , pal fine , but are you set in VTR mode only ... not the tuner ... their crap .
You do have the audio going to the linein on the pc only , dont you ?

Ok , for you chocolate_brownie
What do you think I just used to capture from the xbox360 last night ? ... yes , that avermedia unit is the same thing I have .
But you may want to kill two birds with one stone as they say , as in , include DVB .
WinFast DTV2000
SKYMASTER
Both can be found in ebay , support a/v analog , and includes dvb .
PS: Stay the blazes away from any pinnacle device's ... or as noted as "pineapple" by some ... many frustrated users , and crap support . -
Okay...
the uk is shit and i cant find either of those cards on a uk website.. not even ebay
yeh pinncale sucks.. i have owned a pctv rave for 3 years and havent been able to set it up.. i have had 2 different pc's since then and still no luck so im just giving up! -
is this cable any useful??
I bought it ages ago but never used it?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/X-BOX-360-S-VIDEO-AV-CABLE/dp/B000M08TS8/ref=sr_1_1/203-061860...5284184&sr=8-1 -
Thanks for the advice guys.
Brownie, I was considering getting an S-Video cable to see if that fixed the video problems. The ADS capture box I bought I took back and got a refund, after a weekend of screwing around with it to get it to work with no luck. I didn't think til afterwards though... what if I had flicked the 'HDTV' switch on the standard 360 video cable? Would that have changed the output at all?
I think I'll have to bite the bullet eventually and get a TV tuner card with analogue inputs. FlyTV make a DVB-T one that's in Expresscard so I can use it on my lappy. Grrr... I can't believe how difficult it has been to find something that will capture PAL-60, or at least someone with the experience to tell me what definitely works!
Ah well. Live n' learn. -
Oh and BJS, thanks for the advice, but yeah I had it all set up correctly. 3 RCA's to the 3 RCA inputs on the capture box. I could get clean audio come through on my comp, but the video was distorted like in the picture for PAL-60. All other PAL formats flickered and rolled, and funnily enough NTSC worked, but in black and white. I triple checked the settings on my 360, and it was PAL-60, SD, etc.
-
Anyone else having the issue when they capture video game videos that when they enable audio playback while they're playing, the video severely hiccups and is choppy, but without enable audio playback, playing is fine?
-
Sounds like your system is having trouble coping with the capturing process. As far as I'm aware it's pretty processor intensive, so try turning off your antivirus or any other background programs.

Sounds as though you did most of this , just the audio should never go to a capture device , as it causes problems in most cases , and dosent allow for the best caps quality from devices .
The cable that I received has two options for output , when set to tv only , you use only the yellow (video) , and red / white (audio) , from the cable , dont use the others .
chocolate_brownie
Just from a guess , but that cable is what came with my unit ... if yours came with other , then that is the cable that is required ... and poses less problems when it comes to recording from the xbox360 .
Now to see if my dvd recorder can cap from the xbox360 setup .
For those with low end pcs , it might be worth looking at the wintv-pvr-150
For those with VISTA , before purchase , check device has device drivers available for vista , even then its not guaranteed .
Here's one : http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-Video-Capture-DVD-Creator-Software-Uptated-Aust_W0QQitemZ32...QQcmdZViewItem
Supposedly supports vista 32bit and 64bit .

Capture device being refered to please .
Check the cable you have and confirm it is the one mentioned by link from chocolate_brownie's post .
If it is not the same cable , you need to get one . -
Chocolate Brownie, if it's not too late:

I thought that the capture card would capture whatever is showing on the TV screen?? apparently not?? HELP!!!!! -
What are you connecting your TV card's inputs to? Best if you plug your Xbox straight into the card, if possible.

Currently this means you have rf cable connected ... xbox360 input wont be coming via this method , ever .
Connect via xbox360 rca outputs to :
Vcr / tv with both rca input / output preferred (play / capture at same time)
Yellow to capture device video input
Red / white to Y cable > rca to stereo headphone jack conversion cable > pc sound device line in only
Set capture program to VTR or Composite input
Xbox360 appears .
