I have a huge collection of video casette movies that I legally purchased over the years. However, my VCR is getting old, and I see no reason to buy a new one, since DVD has taken over. I tried direct dubbing (on a Philips VCR-DVD combo), but most movies are protected, so the Philips "refuses" to copy them.
Isn't it legal to copy content that you bought, just to transfer to a media that you can continue using? Is there any way to do it?

No, it's not legal to copy content that you bought although different countries have different rules about maintaining a copy in storage only for use if the original is lost. And yes there is ways to do it, but I doubt you'll be given the answer on here.

It's a little bit involved but start by checking the capturing forum and guides. https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=254624
There is a lot of background info you might have to read up on at first so you can truely understand the process and the expected results. -
Easiest way for me was to purchase a Hauppauge PVR250 and TDA. The PVR250 ignores the Macrovision signal, which is what was stopping you. Plus you can set the resolution and bitrate with a great deal of control. Comes highly recommended.

You need a second unit to play it , and to pass the signal through whats known as a video stabalizer , before it enters the dvd recording unit .
