  1. Hi,

I have an .avi file that needs to be split into 4 parts. I used AVI & MPEG Splitter and split them. When I tried to play them, they would only play with VLC Media Player. In Properties, the file type is "File", not .avi. The program converted it to this file type by itself. There's no option available to choose any file type, whether .avi, mpeg, etc.

Does anyone know anything about this and what I can do to convert them back to .avi? I can't find a file to .avi converter.

If you go to any folder and click on 'Tools>Folder Options>Views', do you have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked? If not, you are not seeing the extensions and you can't change them. If you do have it unchecked, change '.file' to '.avi' and see if it can be played. VLC can ignore those extensions, so that's why it may be able to play the files. In other words, it may just be a naming problem.

It you need to split AVIs in the future, you might try VirtualDub Mod. Use 'Direct steam copy' and it should work very fast. Do your splits on a keyframe by using the keyframe icon to jump between them and you should have no problems with the split files.

Or I may be misunderstanding you. Properties should show most AVI files as a 'Audio Video File'. If it doesn't then you may have a problem with with associations, not extensions. If so, just pick a player in the 'Opens with' selector, and the 'Type' should be correct. You can also set associations in the 'Folder Options>File Types'. Though in my 'File Types', I don't have any file types or extensions with the name 'file' just by itself.

  3. Hi redwudz,

I have it set to not hide file extensions. The 4 split files have no extensions. It shows that the entire file is .avi though. To find out the type of file, I went into Properties of the file and it just said File. I thought this was very strange also.

I tried VirtualDub, not VirtualDub Mod. It created .avi files but instead of being about 375,000kb each, they were about 1,825,000kb each.
