It's not necessary to rename it.
In WMP click open file, after choose "All files" and then double click in MPEGAV => AVSEQ01.dat. The problem with WMP it does not recognise .dat file, but internally it knows that's a mpg file.
In my WindowsME works nice.

I recently tried to play a VCD and Windows Media Player keeps telling me "A device attached to the system is not functioning. The only file in MPEGAV is AVSEQ01. Is this the right file? Any help is appreciated.
