I have a nice new LCD Toshiba HDTV that I'm also using as my computer monitor. The TV only supports what it refers to as xVGA resolutions, which don't include wide screen resolutions. This is fine, I just use the setting on my TV to stretch the square image to the sides and it looks fine.
The problem I am having occurs when I try to play any widescreen video file in full screen mode. The player (I have tried WMP and VLC) still thinks it's playing a widescreen picture in a square 4:3 resolution, so there are large black stripes on the top and the bottom.
Is there a player out there (or a feature I have missed) that would be able to output a widescreen video file to stretch out and fill the entire 4:3 screen? The sideways stretch from my TV would get the picture back to the correct aspect ratio, and it would fill the entire screen (as is the case when I use a dvd player on the same TV).
Thanks! sorry to make such a simple problem seem complicated... I feel like i could explain it better with figures...

The freeware KMplayer will do that.
You can choose fullscreen overscan. You can also press key combinations like ctrl + 8 to increase height or ctrl + 2 to decrease the height. Many other options and key codes to change width, placement, brightness, contrast, capture compressed clips and images, open video capture devices, etc.....
It's much more than a player. -
Thanks ver much gll99!! This is exactly what I was looking for, and since in some files the picture is stretched too much, the additional ability to adjust the height is perfect!! Thank you thank you thank you!

What is the HDTV model number and the display card model number?
Are you sure 1024x768 XGA is all that it will do? -
