Having just ripped first dvd.....using smartripper, then dvd2avi, then tpmgenc.............tested by playing mpeg files in media player..... quality is NOT very good at full screen....especially at the edges...most noticable on dark bits, ....very grainy!....should it be?.
Also big problem....sound is lagging around 20 seconds behind the video, quite funny..makes them cheep japanese kung-fu films look quite professional!!!
THEN, when I tried to burn mpegs to rw/cd...(using nero) the whole bloody thing bombed out at 10%....and keeps doing so......seems read buffer is filling but once at 100% it sticks (should never get to 100% full....it's supposed to empty as if fills), have had this before when burning holiday vids to vcd....one of those probs that I fixed without knowing how lol,......hope I can fix it again but the first part of problem I have no idea about.....help!

Just tried to make vcd from short trailer.....everything seems to be working right up to the encoding stage. Can play vob once ripped and sound is perectly synced.......can still play vob ok after dvd3avi (though I don't think dvd2avi changes vob anyway?).....however, as soon as vob is encoded using tmpgenc and I attempt to play relusting mpeg...video plays fine but sound is lagging afew secands behind......and if my previous attemp to full film is anything to go by, the bigger the file, the further behind the sound is......after jurassic3 finnished encoding, audio was at least 10 mins behind video!!!....I am following all the various guides for making vcd's yet none seem to broach this subject?.
At least with small file size (and burning at 1x) I was able to burn trailer to a vcd and it played 'ok' in stanalone player.......video was very slightly jerky.....audio as before, afew secands lag.
It's bugging me now, I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong?. It cannot be my system as I am capable of capturing from digital video camera and successfully authering a perfect vcd from that! -
make sure you are encoding at the proper frame rate, you must select the right template to match this, film for 23.97, ntsc for 29.97, pal for 25. If not your audio never will be in sync.

Think I've sorted it!!!!.....was trying to use dvd2avi with 'forced film' enabled....for a PAL rip!....turned it off and was able to make a perfect mpeg with sound perfectly in sync.
Still gotta problem with burning as a vcd though....seems ok with smallish file sizes...ie trailer I sucessfully did was only3 minutes... 30meg......problems start when I try to burn full 70 mins. as one mpeg file.
CDRW used is memorex 4420
Nero (full version) on default settings for pal vcd
file caching on
cach size set to maximum 80 meg (plenty spare in pc)
write speed 1x (for maximum chance of error free burn)
with big files it just seems to reach 10% then stops with a timeout error.
(sorry that burning bit is not on topic for this forum.....but first part was)
Anyone using same writer experienced same problems?
