Hi,
This isn't rocket science but a great way to improve your iPod's performance is to defragment it using plain ole' Windows XP Disc Defragmenter. The iPod must be in "Enable Disc Use" mode so it will show up as a USB external drive in your Explorer. DISCLAIMER!!!! Do not try this unless you have all your library backed up! Also DO NOT run scandisc or any other utilities. I've done this several times and my video playback has less hiccups and general browsing etc. is greatly improved. If you've never done it it may take some time the first time. I've had no issues after several defrags and it is really just common sense for any HDD device.

Don't do this!
I did. After being defragmented, my Ipod quit in the middle of and lost the bookmark for what ever audiobook I had been listening too - every time I started it. After reset to factory, all is O.K.
If you want to do this right - first, make sure you have all of your media saved on your computer. Reset your Ipod to factory condition, and reload every thing. The new load will be without fragmenting on the disk.
