    Hi,

I have some problems with the sound playback on certain AVI files. I have used AVICodec to figure out that they are, for example:

    File: 12.87 MB (12.87 MB), Length: 0:00:36, type: AVI, 1 lydspor, quality: 94 %, CASIO EX-S770
    Video : 12.11 MB, 2822 Kbps, 29.969 fps, 640*480 (4:3), M4S2 = MS ISO MPEG4 V2
    Sound: 777 KB, 177 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 1 kanaler, 0x11 = IMA ADPCM, CBR

The problem is that the sound is about 1-2 seconds delayed when I play them on my desktop computer but they play fine on my laptop and a third PC! I can play other types of AVI files fine along with other video formats.

Can anyone tell me what could be the problem?

The problem could be any of the following

    the player
    the version of the codecs
a codec pack having been applied at some point

What happens if you encode it using a different codec on your laptop, then play it on the offending PC ?

    Thanks for the reply!

I have tried different players - same result.

As suggested, I tried encoding one of the AVI files as wmv on my laptop and it played fine on both computers - I then tried encoding it on the offending PC and what do ya know?!: Same result - it plays fine! Weird! I'd think that a codec problem would also cause problems when encoding to a different format... Or is that just me not knowing a thing about codecs?

I have tried installing a codec pack but only AFTER the problem occured. This resulted in player crash every time I tried to open this type of AVI file, so I uninstalled it again.

Is there a way to kill all codecs and start from scratch? Or is it unlikely to be a codec problem when I can encode the clip to wmv with no audio issues?

    Solved it!

I managed to isolate the problem to the quartz.dll file. I used MMCompView to disable and enable different codecs. It turned out I had two Direct Show video renderer codecs. I diabled one of them - and hey! It worked!

One of the (many) problems with codec packs in particular, but even the use of many codecs on a single machine, is that inevitably some of them will clash, and it will be time consuming to track down the source. Your diligence has paid off, and I am glad you found the cause.
