I use a program from Gamani called Gif Movie Gear. What I like about version 4 is that I can use high resolution bitmap images and create a HD-AVI where I was forced to use a 256 color palette in the older versions. Animated gifs are still 256 color of coarse.

Gif Movie Gear will save as Gif, AVI, SWF, BMP images, JPEG images, Photoshop PSD, PNG images, icon, cursor and animated cursor.

The new version of Virtualdub 1.7.1 is capable of creating animated gifs bit I can't seem to make it work right.

  6. I use Ulead Cool 3D. Takes a bit of working out how to do it. There's a free trial available.

For Avi -> Gif, Microsoft Gif Animator. For Gif -> Avi I've been using JanSoft Movies 13, though I've found I can open gifs in Avisynth DirectShowSource as well.

Microsoft Gif Animator was the first program I used back in 1999. I tried three trial versions of Gif Movie Gear before I bought it for around $15. I think the new version is around $30 but I got the upgrade for free.

I found that if I open the gif that I made with Virtualdub in another editor that I can fix it so Microsoft Gif Animator could come in pretty handy if you only use freeware. By doing a Google search, I see that it can still be downloaded from a few different freeware sites.

One thing I was disappointed with Gif Movie Gear 4 was that it gives me error messages when trying to open XviD and DivX files, stating that I need to install the codecs which are already installed. It won't accept Avisynth scripts but I can frameserve these files to Gif Movie Gear 4, just using the small part I want instead of having to open a huge AVI file. If Gamani had a support forum, I could share this knowledge to Gif Movie Gear 4 users.

EDIT: Just installed the newest version ( movgear 4.0.2 ) and it will now open DivX but still won't open XviD without the help of frameserver in Virtualdub.
