Hello there folks. I apologize in advance for taking your time. I did in fact search through the forums using the search feauture but I didn't seem to find the solution I was looking for. About two weeks ago I converted some of my old VHS tapes to DVD using a stand alone DVD recorder. None of this was copyrighted material, mainly some family footage, along with some local sports footage from about 10 years ago. So I now have the footage converted to DVD and I want to put some of it on youtube. I am really new to all of this so I figured this would be the best place to ask. Can I use dvd shrink to burn it to my hard drive and then convert it to the right file to play on youtube? Or in fact is there an easier solution for me. Again, thank you for your help and I apologize if this question has been asked numerous times in the past.

clips on you tube are quite short, only a few minutes, and NO you don't want to convert to DVD for youtube..

you got it on the PC, so its either mpeg or avi

    youtube accepts ( i think ) avi & flv

you need to edit & cut your files ao that you obtain some clips of what you want to upload

you can use the editing software that came with your capture hardware or some of the free tools from here

you have those clips then you convert those too the format youtube wants

you can go to the website and read from there what they upload specs are

just guessing but i'm thinking something like 320*240 at 25fps and avi container with Xvid codec for the video & mp3 for the sound

YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats.

tecmobo34 mentions that he used a stand-alone DVD recorder so how would he have it on his PC in that way?

    @tecmobo34
theewizard is correct about editing. Make short clips - the highlights - of your material. Part of YouTube's appeal is short and to-the-point content. There are only about 5,391 ways to do what you're asking so get to know this site, and the doom9.net forums very well. You'll first need to rip the DVD's to your PC's hard drive. Then you'll need to demux the VOB files down to MPEG-2 files. Then you'll need to trim and edit your content, leaving only the interesting stuff. Finally, you'll need to convert those MPEG-2 files to something more web-friendly, such as one of the formats that BJ_M mentioned. Depending on your time and patience, all of this can be done with fully functioning free software.

Just my personal opinion, but the following downloads have been essential in my experiences:

    VirtualDubMOD
    AviSynth
    DGIndex
    Xvid Codec
    WMNicEnc

    Good luck and welcome.

Youtube is limited to a 10 minute file no bigger than 100 megabytes.

well I thinks he knows he has to get on the PC to send it to youtube, they are not going to accept DVD's in the mail and do it

thats why i didn't mention that point
