  1. Hey!

I tried to capture from TV a while ago, but I just didn't get a good quality for the MPEG-movie. I currently use virtualdub to capture to AVI and TMPGenc to convert to VCD, have a 400 Mhz Celeron with 196 MBs of Ram and a TNT2-Card and a Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM. I can't describe the picture quality, but anyway it is really lousy...I tried to switch antenna/aerial cables, just to proof they are not broken, but that didn't helped. As you will mention, I used the capture method postet here on vcdhelp.com. So how can I make quality rips..just need a better CPU or more RAM, or need a better TV-Card or better some other Capture-Card: So shortly: What is best for Ripping to VCD ? Just for the protocol, I want to make quality TV-Rips, which I can keep, so plz help, prize doesn't matter in first place, just wanna know what's good and what's not and how to make quality VCD-Rips (plz name good Programs and Hardware).

    lobo,

    botton line? ...4get it!
    You ask for too much.
You system needs an harty upgrade!

else, try one of those hardware
    mpeg1/2 capture. They shoud work
    fine for your slow system.

But, for really good quality VCD
or SVCD better, then upgrade your
    system and use AVI capturing
    instead.

ANY AVI capure cardwill do. . .
    ie, ATI-TV Wonder, WinTV GO,
to name a few, both under $70
    smackers!
I use the ATW card above (not AIW)
And I cap at 352x480 and encode
to xSVCD and get pretty good
    results. i cap from satalete.
You can cap from DVD as well, and
I have said in the past that it's
prob better at times, but I may
be in error now. But, that's the
past. I make mistakes (and correct
    myself for it)

A few weeks ago, I turned one of
my xSVCD captures into a standard
VCD and even amazed myself at the
quality of it. Though it had lost
some of it's sharpness. But, I did
make a dent in it non-the-less.
I was experimneting w/ VCD and
decided I needed to try out what
knowledge I had gained since, on
none other, than one of my own
    xSVCD's. So, I used DVD2AVI on
my clip and in short, produced a
decent VCD out of it, w/out pumping
up the bitrate past 1150k. As you
can see, I really don't like to go
    beyond the so called standards.
As for VCD's, if I have to push
    the settings further than the
    standards, to get decent quality,
then it AINT worth trying to make
    a VCD after all!!!

    oh, mail-call... .later
