I have problems with audio sync of MKV when played in Windows Media Player 11, VLC Player or Zoom Player. I have

Pentium 2.4 (512K L2 cache) with HT (Hyper Threading)
    1.5 GB Kingston DDR400 ram.
NVidia 6800GT Graphic Card (HDTV capable).

When the MKV 720p file is played, one of my cpu (virtual cpu of course) peaks to 100% where other sitting there not doing much at all. The full overall CPU utilization is about 55% - 60%. Now the question is that, is it my CPU not handling the decoding process of MKV HD format or is it my Graphic Card or Is there any setting for filters etc that may fix the problem. I should add that the file being played is well encoded with no original sync problem, because it has been tested on other faster PC (2.4 Core 2 Duo).

    Thanks in advance.

What video codec in the mkv? avc/h264? and what audio?

For avc try CoreAVC (it's worth 10 bucks) and haali media splitter for mkv decoding and ffdshow for ac3 and dts audio.
