A Region 3 DVD on Region 1 running WinXP...

I have one of those weird "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" DVD's from Malaysia. It's a region 3, but you can play it in a standalone DVD player and even a US Playstation 2, by stopping the movie at the very beginning and playing it again. I need to rip this to my hard drive, but none of the region hacks seem to be working on my XP box. I have a Hitachi GD-7000 DVD-ROM and I have even used a Region hacker for the formware on the DVD-ROM to make it Region 3, but I can't get the thing to play or let me rip the VOB's. I can browse the files on the DVD, but the VOB's are 0 bytes. I have tried using DVD-Genie and Region Killer, but none of those seem to work either. Can somebody help me?
