Hi!, I own a Canon digicam and have been taking a lot of videos lately, I found out that the only video editor software that seems to work with the files my Canon Digicam produces (.avi files encoded with M-jpg codec) is Windows Movie maker, the problem is that it will only compress to .wmv files which are not appropiate for DVD.
I tested most of the popular video editors, Adobe Premiere 7.0,wonīt open the files, Sony Vegas will only recognize audio but not video, Nero Vision recognizes the files but has a problem when saving, Videowave from Roxio doesnīt recongnize them as well. I know thereīs a workaround recompressing the files to DV but it takes too long and too much HD space, I would stick with WMM but the .wmv videos are not DVD compatible. I wonder if thereīs a good or at least decent movie editor (or movie editor plugin) able to work directly with Canon m-jpg .avi files, edit them and then save in mpge2, Anyone knows?? Thanks, any help very much appreciated

You already answered your own question:

That's the price you pay for quality.Get a faster computer and bigger HD, and everything will work out fine.

BTW, there are editor apps that'll work with MJPEG, but if you're already having trouble with DV, anything else isn't going to help you. Most MJPEG files are roughly the same filesize and the same computational complexity as DV files (because they're very similarly based on the same DCT technology).

Note: you could just have a codec problem (need to get an appropriate VFW-compliant MJPEG codec like Mainconcept's). Then most if not all of those apps you mentioned would support it natively. But you'll still have the size/speed constraints...

First you can output WMM to DV-AVI (Other settings). DV-AVI will be accepted by most DVD Encoders.

Second current version entry home editing software advertise support for digital camera video. Either full Vegas or ULead Video Studio 9 probably loaded the MJPEG (MJPG_MainConcept Video V3.2.4) codec that decodes these files on my system into Vegas, Premiere or Video Studio. I can't say which program loaded the decoder.

Hi, thanks for your replies guys,

    Cornucopia:

these mjpg files are about half the size DV files at about 2mb/s, i donīt think this is a codec problem since i can play the files perfectly in WMP and any other player, If you know an application that support these files it would be helpful if you mention the names, I really canīt believe that WMM is the only software supporting these files pretty common in digicam videos

    edDV:

I know i can save the files in NTSC DV .avi in WMM but as I said this is too much time/space consumming. I donīt know about ULead Video Studio but I donwloaded the latest version of Sony Vegas and it wonīt recognize the video of these files

I just looked again at my machine that has Vegas 6d and Video Studio 9 and there are two MJPEG codecs in there under custom AVI. The other is just named MJPEG Compressor. I just remembered it also has Nero 7 loaded.

Iīm running the trial version of Vegas 7.0, either it lacks the codec or my machine lacks it cause i canīt find it, Iīll check the Mainconcept mjpg codec that Carnucopia suggested, Thanks

Loading a Canon MJPEG file into NeroVision gets "Unexpected File Format".

The programs that load and play the Canon file are:

    WMM
VirtualDubMod (using one of those codecs)
    Vegas 6d
    ULead Video Studio 9
    Cyberlink PowerDVD 6 Player
    VLC Player
    Windows Media Player
    Nero Show Time

I still don't know which programs loaded the MJPEG codecs.
