i see that 20-25 bucks for 100 packs of both cds and dvds seem to be the going rate. i'd like to get a reel of both. i've found a $21 tdk cd 100 pack and a $26 tdk dvd 100 pack with free shipping. are there better deals or better companies? taiyo yuden seems to get a lot of praise, but i've only owned memorex, sony, and tdk. any help out there?

The best money can buy is Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. The 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD discs seem to be a bit better than the 16x variety (knock on wood). For Verbatim you want the 16x variety.

Taiyo Yuden is best bought at RIMA.COM

The Verbatim 16x DVD discs are often ON SALE at either BEST BUY and/or OFFICE MAX ... always check the Sunday paper.

    P.S.
No current sale at BEST BUY but OFFICE MAX has 25 packs of Verbatim 16x DVD discs (DVD-R and DVD+R) for $12.99 which is a damn fine price. I believe the sale is over at the end of this Saturday (April 7, 2007).

I would second Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Rima. I use TY 16X, but TY 8X is hard to beat. For DL, Verbatim DVD + seems also to be the top performer. You don't have to buy from Rima.com, but at least check them out.

CD, doesn't make much difference to me. Most all perform adequately, IMO. I got a good buy on 200 TY's, so that's what I will use for a while.

For DVDs, I've used many types over the years mostly DVD+R and since I've switched to using Verbatim 16X +R I have yet to burn a single coaster. I always burn them at full speed. My LG 4163b burner seems very compatible with that brand.

Most brands of CD's have always been pretty good with only a rare bad burn but my recent experience with the last 50 pack of Verbatim is 100% success.

I've only used Memorex DL discs. The 5 pack in their own individual cases all worked well but the 10 pack spindle resulted in 4 coasters. The burn just hit a bad spot after burning a few hundred MB and then produced an error. I wouldn't recommend that brand in the spindles.

btw) It's not the burning app or burning an image vs regular data or just one data file. When I switched to one from the 5 pack it burned ok but the next one on the spindle was the same. I even took them from different spots in the spindle. That happened 4 times with different files even switching burning app. 4 out of 10 is too much to be a coincidence so I won't be buying those again. I still have one spindle left but I don't like the odds of success and I don't trust the longevity of the resulting disc. I wouldn't call myself a big fan of DL discs.

DL discs seem to be problematic at present. Definitely not mainstream. With that said, there is no reason why other manufacturers can't make perfect DL discs, unless there is some trade secret they are not privy to.

But that isn't happening at present. The Verbatim DL + discs, for some several reasons, seem to work much better than other brands, with more burners and players being compatible. I would welcome a change, so that most any DL + disc would work perfectly with any DL + burner and any player. But that hasn't happened.
