  3. Try Nero's recode 2. It now does 640xYYY H.264 at 1.5 mbps. That is the bests quality that you can have for Itunes and AppleTV. It will do two pass encodes and crop the black bars. Only issue for you would be $80.00 to go this way. (Unless you have this app and can upgrade fro less)

  6. H.264 can be up 10 or 15 mbps, but if you want your video to play on both appletv AND Ipod, the max you have to set at 1.5 mbps

If you want to only convert to playback on AppleTV you can do up 5 mbps. Even at DVD resz (720x480) I don't think you would need to go higher than 3.

I have used Nero to encode "freestyle" H.264 at 3 mbps on a DVD to test play back on an XBOX360. Wife and I could not really see a difference. I could now have a moive that's half the size, but lose the 5.1

I'm hoping that now a "new" Ipod will have the Nvidia Go Force chip that does 3D graphics and h.264 at DVD resz, I could up my videos to a higher quality and stream to my XBOX, appleTV and sync to my IPOD. My dream is to have all of my movies on a server and stream to the house, take on the road and store the disc. I'm not that big into 5.1 (its cool but doesn't work in my room)
