Hey, guys, I wonder if you could help me out here:
Win X0
AMD
I just noticed my C: drive (where the system lies) is a complete mess, jumbled files all over, so I decided to tidy up the place.
Unfortunately, I canīt get Win Xp to defrag the cursed thing, it stops 6-10 seconds going in.

When you play it forward, it installs windows." -
Have you tried scanning the drive first to fix any errors that may be there? Also you should stop processes running before running defrag, or just run defrag in safe mode.

Have faith young General Mortars
Defrag is Micro$oft software (well a rip off of someone elses which has been crippled) and works in geological time.
My best suggestion (and it sound like you've not run it before is)
1 - shut down as must stuff as possible - including stuff in system tray
2 - start defrag
3 - have a drink and go to bed
4 - wake up (late) and your drive should be defrag'd
Remember you need 10-15% free space for defrag to work. -
Or get a better defrag program than the one provided with windows.
I use Diskkeeper but there are a few other good ones. -
Turn off your anti-virus software .. thats whats stopping defrag. I would agree that there are many better commercial defraggers on the market. The MSoft one is very slow. If you can, try to offload some really big files eg dvd files 7,8 gb worth. The defrag will go faster the more hard drive space is free. If your drive is really fragmented, (p2p software??) start this process and then go away for the weekend. regular defragging will take much less time and is part of any good PC hygiene program.

Yes, download.com should have some.
Better to just do it in SAFE mode or from the DOS prompt. -
I use Perfect Disk .... just click analyse and it will tell you the state of your disk and reccomend how best to defrag ... for system disks (c: drive) it will usually advise an offline defrag ... select this option and restart your pc and the defrag will start (this removes the need to stop programs and antivirus etc) ... now as defragging takes a while why not set it running in the evening .... pay a visit to your local pub .... return home after closing time and if defragging isn't yet complete ... go to bed safe in the knowledge that it will be complete when you get up in the morning (altho if you have enough beer at the pub you won't care whether its done or not ... nursing the hangover will be more important lol)

You should have at least 20% free disk space before running any defrag app.
