Admittedly, I haven't tested that many DVD recorders over the years.
No where near the number of units as many of our senior members.
But the following results made me take note......
Played back a Pan EH55 LP recording of Smallville today in a Pio DVR220.
Signal fed into a Pan 42px600u plasma via component input.
It was dowloaded from a Moto 3412 STB, while watching Smallville in HD.
Mbps ranged from 1.04 - 7.23Mbps!
What processor is this unit using?
I am used to CVBR recordings.
Like on the 5005, or Sony GX7.
Even the Pio DVR220 bitrate range doesn't compare.
Point being.... While LP may be a 720x480(?) full frame, due to the WIDE bitrate range,
the PQ is superb. No blockiness.
I suspect the lack of blockiness is NOT a result of the units DNR circuits.
Rather more attributable to the WIDE bitrate range.
I did not expect this result.
I have never been a Pan fan.

I have an EH55S in for testing and would like to see if I can confirm your results. One thing I noticed about the EH55 is that it cannot burn to dvd+r DL directly, but only by copying from the hard drive. Are your burns copies from the hdd or are you capturing directly to a a dvd disk?
The DNR circuits I believe only affect playback and not recording. Line In NR does affect recording. -
I captured "Smallville" from Comcast HD channel -- going from the Moto 3412 STB to the EH55S *200 gb HDD* using SVHS. I copied from HDD to a DVD+RW, and noted bitrates on Pio DVR220. Considering there is no DNR on input, the lack of blockiness in PQ at LP is even more amazing.
LP resolution, as you know, is rated at 500 lines. Did not confirm this.
Pls advise of your test results.

I cannot confirm your results. The EH55S tests look similar to the ES10 tests I did a few years ago. The expected macroblocks are about the same in LP mode. What is different is that noise around the lines in the floor that distinguish the tatami mats look better in the EH55S.
The results are here,

I can mail you a copy of the Smallville 3/31 episode discussed above.
You can examine the bitrates.
If interested, please PM me.
