  1. Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me why so many people have a beef with nero and use VCDImager instead? Could someone explain the faults with Nero and its standards which make it un-desireable to use?

    Thanks a bunch,

  2. I love Nero, but VCDImager can do things that Nero can't. I can't imagine making a VCD without chapters now, for example.

I'm really not sure where to start with NERO...

#1 It cannot burn correct VCD's/SVCD without a sacrifice, being either synch issues, menu issues, or search function on their standalone

#2 Even if you use something like VCDImager to make a disc image, NERO does not burn bin/cue files properly.

#3 If you ever burn even normal .iso disk images of regular software, NERO also screws these up with disgusting regularity.

Really I have not seen anything NERO does that it does outstandingly well...

I'm sure people will add more to this list, because I assure you there are more...

Nero has its uses, it works on XP, it burns simple Photo sequences to good quality.

It is quite rid on the format of VCD and SVCD it will accept. Fine for VCD but not so good if your format for SVCD exceeds its expections, like mine which uses a different audio setting.

The problem is, no one has the same set up or requirement, to it is purely down to what works for one etc.

I personally don't have too much against Nero as I don't use it. However, from the perspective of a moderator, my "beef" against is as follows:
    1. Nero authored still menus are buggy -- they don't work on most software DVD players and even some hardware players
    2. Nero can accept clearly off spec MPEG-1 files as "VCD Compliant". Thus, the unsuspecting user (with a tolerant player) can be making XVCDs without even knowing it -- also, it gives some people (Nero lovers) a warped sense of what exactly is "VCD compliant"
    3. Nero historically had a problem with burning CUE/BIN images -- and in the context of VCDs with PBC authored content, it would burn a coaster. This may or may not be fixed now

Also, I have one personal gripe too... back in the early days of VCD authoring/burning, I was using an old 2x SCSI Smart and Friendly drive (SAF 2006plus). Nero had an idiosyncratic problem with this drive so that the VCDs came out with the video and audio that was essentially "mangled"... It took me a long time to work out that it was an idiosyncratic problem (mainly by identical problems posted by other users of the same drive).

  6. Why do so many people respond to what is obviously a troll post?

  7. Nero is a great program for your basic burning, especialy for newbie, and it works great for quite alot, but once you get used to VCDImager GUI's (TSCV or VCDEasy for example) you find that they provide you with many advantages that Nero does not, and they also create a more standard VCD/SVCD so there are higher chances the media being burned will be more compatible.

    Why did you respond then?

Nero has historically been very highly praised for VCD authoring (back in the days of v5.0) but with the relatively recent change in the quality and functionality of software (e.g., VCDImager, free VCD Toolkit, Videopack 5, WinOnCD 3.8PE, etc.) many users have moved away from Nero.

The additional authoring capabilities in Nero 5.5 though welcome, have also been fraught with problems...

I don't think this is a troll post (yet) as it is simply users reporting problems they have experienced with Nero 5.5 despite it on the face looking to be quite a good simple S/VCD authoring proggy.

  9. I agree with you vitualis on everything (wow, first time I think!), Nero is great for basic functionality, but with people wanting more features now, like the Chapters and Menus, and more advanced, then the VCDImager GUI's are becoming more and more popular and getting easier to use as well.

Hmmm, why do I get the feeling that was a personal dig at a certain member of this forum

I don't know if I agree with anyone saying NERO's "great" at anything...

I think I've had problems with it pretty much with every feature mentioned here...

NERO sucks, it's substandard, let's never speak that name here again!

  12. Homerpez, I don't know why you don't like Nero, but i've had every feature of it working perfectly, either using regular Data CD's, Bootable CD's, Overburning, (X)S(x)VCD's and everything else included.

So I will speak the name Nero again and again, untill you say why you don't like it

Substandard would be EZ CD, that for over 100mb, has less features then Nero or any other program, atleast WinOnCD has the great menu system and Photo Album, EZ CD has nothing and its' twice the size of WinOnCD.
