I hope this is the right forum ... I need to know if philips DVP630/02 supports playing subtitles. If it does, which kind?

    Thank you!

The 630 has the same support as the 642. It supports srt subititles in text (not image) format.

If the DVP-630 is like the DVP-642, you must select the subtitle first before selecting the Divx video. SRT in text format is your best choice. Supposedly the DVP-642 will support 1 or 2 other formats, but I was never able to make anything but SRT work.

Haven't made one in a while but...
Did you keep the name the same
    ie...
    1.srt
    1.avi

If you mux the avi and srt then you can select the subtitle with the menu button. I prefer them that way since it's easy to turn them on and off.

Assuming you are activating them correctly, it's possible the srt file is corrupt or not in text format.

The movie and srt file should have the same name as suggested above. You must then highlight the srt file in the menu and press the subtitle button. You will then get a "subtitle selected" message (If you don't get the message or you only see the "hand", then the file is corrupt or the wrong format). Then highlight the movie and press play.

I found out that if I edited a subtitle file in Unix/Linux, it didn't work. The Philips player expects the SRT file to have DOS CR-LF characters in it at the end of each line and Unix/Linux don't use those 2 characters to signify end of line. If you edit an SRT file on anything other than a Windows PC, you may have this problem. There are programs that can convert between DOS and Unix end of line sequences (unix2dos and dos2unix do this) and I used one of those programs and it fixed my problem.

what does in text format mean?

movie and subtitles have the same name.

when i select subtitles i only see 'hand'

i'll try with another movie but i'm afraid it'll be the same.

EDIT: it doesn't work with a different movie

Text format means the files are ASCII text files.

You should be able to open the files using notepad, or any other text editor. If they are image format, a text editor can't read them.

I've also seen posts from other users that have recently purchased the 642 that can't get subtitles to work. So this could be an issue with the "new" 642.
